Hence why I said "personally". I never found myself needing to use a desktop office suite for any such task. I usually just use overleaf/sharelatex if I'm writing something that needs printing, otherwise I am not really used to office apps outside of "collaboratively editing docs or spreadsheets at work". I'm sure other users find more value in having office installed, I haven't since I was in high school

Also having to actually install an office suite on my computer feels like an outdated concept.

So is BBSing, but you still do it. Think if it as "retro-computing". :)

What if you need to write a formal letter/response to <whatever>? Like
a request for information, or a letter to an official organization or something? That's not collaborative, it's just personal. Not
    everything involves multiple people.

These days such activities are done via email. Even resumes are often submitted as plain text via email.

Makes more sense to switch browser tabs than to switch between apps.

Seriously? Switching between browser tabs: <CTRL-tab#). Switching between applications: <ALT-TAB>. Yeah, big difference.

Plus, unlike Microsoft Office, it's free.

So are the MO Web apps.
