i used the existing directory. removed all the files. pasted ff files in.
And as you found out, this is absolutely not going to work. It would work if you just did the simple thing and moved/copied the folder.
Doing it in the simplest fashion possible works just fine. How do I know, and why would I have even suggested it?
Oh, I dunno, must be someone just wanting to tell stories about mythical things.

I did mention in a post that FF sync is fine and is what is recommended. Import from FF to a chromium based browser and back to a FF browser is possible but not as good as a simple profile move.
Not sure why you're so worked up about it. Moving a folder is just a fine solution for someone who can actually handle doing so. If you can't handle doing so, that's fine, but that doesn't make it not a solution.
You could always ask for help.
