    Until the last couple of years I saw no great use for it but I did
    finally start using it the last couple of years. It can have it's
    uses - great for having a backup of files you may need on other
    devices and transferring those files between devices.

    That said, I don't keep anything too critical there and anything close
    to private I have in password protected Zip files and if there are
    things like passwords in those files, I also have shortcuts that remind
    me of what they are but wouldn't be of any use to anyone else.

    I also ignore the 4 cloud accounts I automatically got from various
    eMail and computer accounts and I use one that is located in Canada
    and is encrypted in both directions for extra security. (Sync.com)

    The only mild 'complaint' I might make is I get a lot of eMails from
    them trying to upgrade me to a paid account with hundreds of gigs of
    storage but, since I don't use anywhere near the 5 gigs I get for
    free, I just ignore those.

    I have never trusted it either. Apple (and other phone OSes) have their

    I tend to avoid the big commercial ones. I was given one from Android
    and one from Microsoft and two from 2 eMail account services but I
    figure those might be common targets.

    But I see some value for cloud accounts if you pick the right one and
    then don't put anything too confidential on it.

    But it never ceases to amaze me when people have hundreds of photos automatically sent to the Cloud ever time they take a shot.
    I avoid any automated backup options and I don't put anything out
    there unless I give it some thought first..

    There are specific rules for government cloud use - Microsoft's GovCloud
    is only housed on US servers. As a rule, you encrypt all traffic on the
    wire and encrypt data at rest on volumes. You set up ExpressRoute,
    essentially a dedicated line into Microsoft's data space, so your
    traffic doesn't go across the public internet to get to Microsoft.

    It's good enough for law enforcement and E911 use.

    As for the DOD, I suppose nowadays it's as much a private enterprise as
    it is government entity with contractor use. They'd need to allow
    external access. A cloud is a great way to do so with culpable
    deniability. It's Microsoft's Fault!

    Sync.com = Canadian? Interesting.

    So.. basically they are like another Protonmail file server?

    The problem is that the big providers make money off of data from "free" email users' information and, in my opinion, are inclined to mark as
    SPAM mail not from other large providers.

    gmail makes it difficult, imho, for "not large providers" to send mail to people with gmail accounts.
