In 1883 Fire engines were called out in New York City and New
Haven CT as a result of the afterglow of the sunset due
to vivid red ash from the Krakatoa Volcano explosion in
August.
In 1898 The "Portland" storm raged across New England
producing gale force winds along the coast and heavy snow
inland. A foot of snow blanketed Boston MA, and
27 inches fell at New London CT. Winds at Boston gusted
to 72 mph, and wind gusts to 98 mph were estimated at
Block Island RI. A passenger ship, the S. S. Portland,
sank off Cape Cod with the loss of all 191 persons
aboard, and Boston Harbor was filled with wrecked ships.
The storm wrecked 56 vessels resulting in a total of 456
casualties. (26th-28th)
In 1987 Wet weather prevailed across much of the nation east of
the Rockies. Sunny and cool weather prevailed in the
western U.S. Snow fell in the central U.S., with totals
in Kansas ranging up to six inches at Burr Oak. Much of
the area from central Oklahoma to southwestern Minnesota
experienced its first snow of the winter season.
In 1988 Snow and high winds created blizzard conditions in
Minnesota. Winds gusted to 63 mph at Windom, and
snowfall totals ranged up to 14 inches at Aitkin.
Snow drifts seven feet high closed many roads. Fargo ND
reported a wind chill reading of 34 degrees below zero.
In 1989 A storm system crossing the north central U.S. spread
snow across the Dakotas and Minnesota. Heavy snow fell
in western South Dakota, with 18 inches reported at
Galena. Strong winds associated with the storm gusted to
50 mph in the Great Lakes Region and the Great Plains
Region, with blowing dust reported in Kansas.
Thunderstorms associated with the same storm system
produced damaging winds in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana
during the evening, with gusts to 73 mph reported east of
Ypsilante MI. Unseasonably warm weather prevailed ahead
of the cold front. Twenty-three cities from the Gulf
coast to the Ohio Valley and the Mid Mississippi Valley
reported record high temperatures for the date, including
Saint Louis MO with a reading of 76 degrees.
In 2001 A soggy, stormy period was to plague Arkansas and adjacent
states over the next 3 days. While portions of northern
and northwestern Arkansas got a wintry mix, the rest of the
state received heavy rain, thunderstorms, and flooding.
Three day storm totals ranged from 5 to over 10 inches.
Portions of Oklahoma and western Texas got heavy snow...
while areas east and south of Arkansas saw tornadoes.
In 2003 An upper level low ahead of a cold front brought severe
thunderstorms with large hail and wind damage to Arkansas.
Ahead of the system along the Gulf Coast, heavy rain,
severe thunderstorms, and tornadoes were observed.
In 2005 Severe weather struck Arkansas, with 24 tornadoes...
including several of F-2, and 2 of F-3 intensity.

In 1921 New England was in the midst of a four day icestorm,
their worst of record. Ice was more than three inches
thick in many places following the storm, and property
damage was in the millions. Northern New England
received heavy snow with more than two feet in some
areas. Overnight freezing rains continued through the
day at Worcester MA while the wind increased to a gale.
Streets become impassable even on foot, and whole towns
were plunged into darkness without communication. The
storm caused 20 million dollars damage to power lines,
telephone lines and trees.
In 1960 A severe storm produced waves 20 to 40 feet high on Lake
Superior. Duluth MN was buried under a foot of snow, and
clocked wind gusts to 73 mph. The northern shore of Lake
Superior was flooded and property along the shore was
battered. Thousands of cords of pulpwood were washed
into Lake Superior, and up to three feet of water flooded
the main street of Grand Marais. Thunder accompanied the
"nor'easter".
In 1987 Low pressure in the Middle Mississippi Valley produced a
mixture of snow and sleet and freezing rain from the
Central Plains to the Upper Mississippi Valley. Snow-
fall totals in Iowa ranged up to ten inches at Red Oak.
Totals in Nebraska ranged up to 11 inches at Shickley.
Freezing rain made roads treacherous in the Twin Cities
area of southeastern Minnesota. Bitter cold arctic air
invaded the Northern High Plains Region. Laramie WY was
the cold spot in the nation with a morning low of 18
degrees below zero.
In 1988 Thunderstorms spawned five tornadoes in North Carolina
during the early morning hours. A powerful tornado
ripped through one of the most densely populated areas of
Raleigh destroying hundreds of homes and damaging
thousands more. The tornado killed four persons along
its 83 mile track, and injured 154 others. Total damage
was estimated at more than 77 million dollars.
In 1989 Strong Santa Ana winds prevailed across southern
California. Winds gusted to 70 mph at the Rialto
Airport, and several tractor-trailer trucks were
overturned east of Los Angeles. High winds also buffeted
the northeastern U.S., ushering arctic air into the
region. Winds gusted to 60 mph at Montpelier VT, and
reached 66 mph at Saint Albans VT.
In 2012 A large tornado hit Taranto, Italy.

In 1896 The mercury plunged to 51 degrees below zero at Havre MT.
It marked the culmination of a two week long cold wave
caused by a stagnant high pressure area similar to those
over Siberia during the winter. During the month of
November temperatures across Montana and the Dakotas
averaged 15 to 25 degrees below normal.
In 1969 Dense fog along the Jersey Turnpike resulted in a chain
reaction of vehicle collisions during the morning rush
hour. A propane truck jacknifed and was struck by a
trailor truck, and other vehicles piled into the fiery
mass.
In 1975 Red River NM was buried under 34 inches of snow in
24 hours, which established a state record.
In 1985 The temperature at Bismarck ND plunged to 30 degrees
below zero to establish their record low for the month of
November. The high that day was 4 degrees below zero.
In 1987 Snow blanketed the Upper Mississippi Valley, with heavy
snow reported near Lake Superior. Up to ten inches of
snow was reported in Douglas County and Bayfield County
of Wisconsin. Brule WI received nine inches of snow.
Heavy rain soaked the Middle Atlantic Coast States, while
gale force winds lashed the coastline. Flooding was
reported in Maryland and Virginia.
In 1988 Nine inches of snow at Alta UT brought their total for
the month to 164 inches, surpassing their previous
November record of 144 inches. Snowbird UT, also in the
Little Cottonwood Valley, surpassed their November record
of 118 inches of snow.
In 1989 Strong Santa Ana wind diminished over southern
California, but record cold was reported in some of
the California valleys, with readings of 27 degrees
at Redding and 31 degrees at Bakersfield. Gale force
winds, gusting to 44 mph at Milwuakee WI, produced snow
squalls in the Great Lakes Region. Sault Ste Marie MI
finished the month of November with a record 46.8 inches
of snow.

In 1875 A severe early season cold wave set November records
in the northeastern U.S. The temperature dipped to
5 above zero at New York City, 2 below at Boston MA, and
13 below at Eastport ME.
In 1957 Lee slope winds enhanced by Hurricane Nina gusted to
82 mph at Honolulu, Hawaii, a record wind gust for that
location. Wainiha, on the island of Kauai, was deluged
with 20.42 inches of rain, and 35 foot waves pounded some
Kauai beaches, even though the eye of the hurricane was
never within 120 miles of the islands. (30th-1st)
In 1967 A record November snowstorm struck Washington D.C.
It produced up to a foot of snow in a 12 hour period.
In 1976 MacLeod Harbor AK reported a precipitation total for
November of 70.99 inches, which established a state
record for any month of the year.
In 1987 Showers produced heavy rain in the northeastern U.S. Up
to three inches of rain drenched the Brandywine Creek
Basin of Pennsylvania, and rainfall totals in Vermont
ranged up to two inches at Dorsett. Snow fell heavily
across Upper Michigan as gale force winds prevailed over
Lake Superior. A storm moving into the northwestern U.S.
produced gale force winds along the northern and central
Pacific coast.
In 1988 Snow in the Upper Great Lakes Region pushed the
precipitation total for the month at Marquette MI past
their previous November record of 7.67 inches. Santa
Ana winds in southern California gusted to 75 mph at
Laguna Peak.
In 1989 Squalls produced heavy snow in the Lower Great Lakes
Region, with fifteen inches reported at Chaffee NY and at
Barnes Corners NY. Tropical Storm Karen drenched parts
of Cuba with heavy rain. Punta Del Este reported
fourteen inches of rain in 24 hours.
In 2004 Tropical Storm Otto formed in the Atlantic Ocean, about
810 miles east of Bermuda, on the official final day of
hurricane season...but it was torn apart by upper level
winds on the 2nd of December.

First day of meteorological winter.
In 1831 The coldest December of record in the northeastern U.S.
commenced. Temperatures in New York City averaged
22 degrees with just four days above freezing, and
at Burlington VT the temperature never did get above
freezing. The Erie Canal was closed the first day of
December, and remained closed the entire month.
In 1896 The temperature at Kipp MT rose 30 degrees in just seven
minutes, and 80 degrees in a matter of a few hours. A
thirty-inch snow cover was melted in half a day.
In 1913 A six day front range snowstorm began. It produced
a record total of 46 inches at Denver CO.
In 1978 A short-track tornado destroyed 3 and damaged 17 mobile
homes south of Zephyrhills, FL. No one was killed.
In 1985 A storm produced more than six inches of snow from the
Northern and Central Plains to parts of Michigan, with
36.4 inches reported at Marquette MI. Many roads were
blocked by snow, a family was stranded for 25 hours south
of Colome SD. Drifts twelve feet high were reported in
north central Nebraska.
In 1987 A powerful storm hit the northwestern U.S. Winds gusted
to 80 mph at Cape Disappointment WA, and reached 94 mph
at Cape Blanco OR. Thunderstorms in western Washington
State produced wind gusts to 60 mph and dime size hail at
Hoquiam, and Stevens Pass, in the Cascade Mountains of
Washington, received seven inches of snow during the
morning hours.
In 1988 Squalls in the Great Lakes Region produced up to a foot
of snow in Ashtabula County OH, up to ten inches in Erie
County PA, and up to a foot of snow in western New York
State.
In 1989 Heavy snow blanketed the mountains of New Mexico, with 12
inches reported at the Angel Fire Ski Basin. Strong
northerly winds ushering cold air into the north central
U.S. gusted to 55 mph at Devils Lake ND. Low pressure
over the Gulf of Alaska produced wind gusts to 69 mph at
Kodiak Island.

In 1888 Residents of New York suffered through a record heat
wave. Daily average temperatures were above 80 degrees
for fourteen straight days. The heat wave was a sharp
contrast to the severe blizzard in March of that year,
which buried the city under nearly two feet of snow.
In 1977 "The Human Lightning Conductor", park ranger Roy C.
Sullivan, was struck by lightning for the seventh
time. He was first hit in 1942, then again in 1970,
1972, 1973 and 1976.
In 1983 Record heat prevailed from Texas to Michigan. Alpena MI
hit 98 degrees.
In 1985 A spectacular early morning waterspout developed at 0520
MST from a stationary thunderstorm over the south end of
the Great Salt Lake in Utah. It was visible 20 miles
away, and lasted four minutes.
In 1987 Hot weather prevailed in the Pacific Northwest. Highs of
88 at Seattle WA, 103 at Medford OR, and 111 at Redding
CA were records for the date. Cloudy and cool weather
prevailed in the northeastern U.S. The high at Boston MA
was just 60 degrees.
In 1988 Thirteen cities in the southeastern U.S. reported record
high temperatures for the date. In Montana, the record
high of 102 degrees at Billings MT was their fifteenth of
the month, and the high of 108 degrees at Glasgow MT
equalled their record for June. Thunderstorms in the
Atlantic Coast Region produced wind gusts to 102 mph at
Tall Timbers MD.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from the Central
Plains to the Middle Mississippi Valley. There were 129
reports of severe weather during the day and night.
Thunderstorms in Kansas produced wind gusts to 90 mph at
Liberal, and hail four inches in diameter at Quinter.
Thunderstorms in Wisconsin spawned a tornado at Lake
Delton injuring four persons. Lightning struck and
killed a woman at Junction City KS who had gotten out of
her car to photograph the lightning.

In 1901 There was a rain of fish from the sky at Tiller's Ferry.
Hundreds of fish were swimming between cotton rows after
a heavy shower.
In 1915 The temperature at Fort Yukon AK soared to 100 degrees to
establish a state record.
In 1957 Hurricane Audrey smashed ashore at Cameron LA drowning
390 persons in the storm tide, and causing 150 million
dollars damage in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
Audrey left only a brick courthouse and a cement-block
icehouse standing at Cameron, and when the waters settled
in the town of Crede, only four buildings remained. The
powerful winds of Audrey tossed a fishing boat weighing
78 tons onto an off-shore drilling platform. Winds along
the coast gusted to 105 mph. Oil rigs off the Louisiana
coast reported wind gusts to 180 mph. A storm surge
greater than twelve feet inundated the Louisiana coast as
much as 25 miles inland. It was the deadliest June
hurricane of record for the U.S.
In 1987 Thunderstorms moving out of Nebraska produced severe
weather in north central Kansas after midnight.
Thunderstorm winds gusting to 100 mph damaged more than
fifty camping trailers at the state park campground at
Lake Waconda injuring 16 persons. Thunderstorm winds
gusted to 80 mph at Beloit and Sylvan Grove.
In 1988 The afternoon high of 107 degrees at Bismarck ND was a
record for the month of June, and Pensacola FL equalled
their June record with a reading of 101 degrees.
Temperatures in the Great Lakes Region and the Ohio
Valley dipped into the 40s.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from the Ohio
Valley to western New England. Thunderstorm spawned six
tornadoes, and there were 98 reports of large hail and
damaging winds. Tropical Storm Allison spawned
six tornadoes in Louisiana, injuring two persons at
Hackberry. Fort Polk LA was drenched with 10.09 inches
of rain in 36 hours, and 12.87 inches was reported at the
Gorum Fire Tower in northern Louisiana.

In 1819 Twin cloudbursts of fifteen inches struck almost
simultaneously at Catskill NY and Westfield MA.
Flash flooding resulted in enormous erosion.
In 1873 A Maine tornado took a life indirectly by knocking out a
bridge during the day. Later, a train plunged into the river
at dark.
In 1943 Tishomingo OK baked in the heat as the mercury soared to
121 degrees, a state record.
In 1960 The temperature at Salt Lake City UT hit 107 degrees, an
all-time record high for that location.
In 1987 Thunderstorms developing along a cold front produced hail
two inches in diameter in McHenry County IL, and wind
gusts to 70 mph at Auburn ME. A wind gust of 90 mph was
recorded at Blairstown NJ before the anemometer broke.
The high winds were associated with a small tornado. The
record high of 88 degrees at Beckley WV was their sixth
in a row.
In 1988 Thunderstorms produced large hail and damaging winds
in the MIddle Atlantic Coast Region, and in the south
central U.S. Eight cities in the northwestern and north
central U.S. reported record high temperatures for the
date. Salem OR hit 103 degrees.
In 1989 Morning thunderstorms produced heavy rain in southeastern
Texas, with more than three inches reported at the
Widllife Refuge in southwestern Chambers County. Evening
thunderstorms produced severe weather in Montana, with
wind gusts to 62 mph reported at Helena. Eight cities
from Maine to Minnesota reported record high temperatures
for the date, including Newark NJ with a reading of 99
degrees.
In 2012 Severe weather occurred across Arkansas, as well as from
the Ohio Valley into New England. In Arkansas, 4000 cloud
to ground lightning strikes were noted between 6pm and 7pm
Central Time. Entergy reported over 10,000 customers
were without power from the storms. In an hour, Newport got
1.03 inches of rain, with .46" of that falling in just six
minutes, and they also measured a wind gust of 64 mph.
Four miles west-northwest of Salem, 1 1/2 inches of rain
fell in just 45 minutes. At the Boone County Airport in
Harrison, a wind gust of 54 mph was observed. There were
several reports of trees and power lines down, as well as
wind damage across Arkansas. In the northeast U.S., a woman
in Pennsylvania was killed as a tree crushed a woman in her
car, as she sought shelter at a campsite. In Brooklyn, NY,
a 61 year old man died after lightning struck a church,
sending scaffolding crashing down on him. Possible
tornadoes occurred in Elmira, NY, and in Brookville, PA.
Several people were trapped inside a home in Vestal, NY,
because of downed trees. Damage was also reported in
Binghamton, NY...and there were extensive power outages;
with over 100,000 in Pennsylvania, and 95,000 in New York
without electricity, due to the storms.
In 2022 Record-breaking rainfall caused flash flooding in the St.
Louis, MO area, trapping cars, closing roads, and causing
at least one death.

In 1878 The temperature at Denver CO soars to an all-time record
high of 105 degrees.
In 1881 A cloudburst and flash flood occurred at Central Springs
CO and Idaho Springs CO.
In 1882 An August snowstorm was reported by a ship on
Lake Michigan. A thick cloud reportedly burst on the
decks covering them with snow and slush six inches deep.
Snow showers were observed at shore points that day.
In 1983 The temperature at Big Horn Basin WY reached 115 degrees
to establish a state record.
In 1987 Thunderstorm rains in eastern Nebraska sent the Wahoo and
Ithica Rivers above flood stage. Thunderstorm rains in
western Iowa sent the Nishnabotna River over flood stage.
Up to seven inches of rain deluged the Council Bluffs
area Friday evening and Saturday morning. Thunderstorms
produced 4.4 inches of rain in three hours Friday
evening, along with golf ball size hail.
In 1988 Thunderstorms developing along a slow moving cold front
produced severe weather from central Kansas to southern
Wisconsin late in the day. Thunderstorms in Iowa
produced hail three inches in diameter at Vinton, and
produced wind gusts to 75 mph at Donohue and near Mount
Pleasant.
In 1989 A total of ninety-nine cities in the central and eastern
U.S. reported record low temperatures for the date,
including Alpena MI with a reading of 40 degrees. Mount
Mitchell NC was the cold spot in the nation with a
morning low of 35 degrees. Early evening thunderstorms
around Las Vegas NV produced wind gusts to 116 mph. The
high winds damaged or destroyed about 82 aircraft at
Henderson Sky Harbor Airport and McCarran International
Airport, causing fourteen million dollars damage.

In 1878 The second most deadly tornado in New England history
struck Wallingford CT killing 34 persons, injuring
100 others, and completely destroying thirty homes. The
tornado started as a waterspout over a dam on the
Quinnipiac River. It was 400 to 600 feet wide, and had
a short path length of two miles.
In 1969 A tornado hit Cincinnati OH killing four persons and
causing fifteen million dollars property damage.
The tornado moved in a southeasterly direction at
40 to 50 mph.
In 1987 Florida baked in the summer heat. Nine cities reported
record high temperatures for the date, including
Jacksonville with a reading of 101 degrees. Miami FL
reported a record high of 98 degrees.
In 1988 Tropical Storm Beryl deluged Biloxi with 6.32 inches of
rain in 24 hours, and in three days drenched Pascagoula
MS with 15.85 inches of rain. Afternoon and evening
thunderstorms produced severe weather in the Southern
Plains Region and over the Central High Plains Region.
Thunderstorms in Oklahoma produced wind gusts to 92 mph
at Harrah.
In 1989 Evening thunderstorms in Arizona deluged Yuma with record
torrential rains for the second time in two weeks. The
rainfall total of 5.25 inches at the Yuma Quartermaster
Depot established a state 24 hour record, and was nearly
double the normal annual rainfall. Some of the homes
were left with four feet of water in them. Seventy-six
cities in the south central and eastern U.S. reported
record low temperatures for the date. Lake Charles LA
equalled their record for August with a low of 61 degrees.
Canaan Valley WV was the cold spot in the nation with a
low of 32 degrees.

evacuate Long Island after a defeat. Adverse winds kept
the British fleet from intervening.
In 1839 A hurricane moved from Cape Hatteras NC to offshore New
England. An unusual feature of the hurricane was the
snow it helped produce, which whitened the Catskill
Mountains of New York State. Considerable snow was also
reported at Salem NY.
In 1982 A tropical depression brought torrential rains to
portions of southern Texas. Up to twelve inches fell
south of Houston, and as much as eighteen inches fell
southeast of Austin. The tropical depression spawned
fourteen tornadoes in three days. Record cold gripped
the northeastern U.S. Thirty-one cities in New England
reported record lows, and areas of Vermont received up
to three inches of snow.
In 1987 Eight cities in California and Oregon reported record
high temperatures for the date, including Redding CA and
Sacramento CA where the mercury hit 100 degrees.
In 1988 Thunderstorms drenched Georgia and the Carolinas with
heavy rain, soaking Columbia SC with 4.10 inches in three
hours. Fresno CA was the hot spot in the nation with a
record high of 109 degrees. Duluth MN tied their record
for the month of August with a morning low of 39 degrees.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front produced
large hail in Montana and North Dakota during the evening
and early nighttime hours. Hail three inches in diameter
was reported 20 miles south of Medora ND, and
thunderstorms over Dawson County MT produced up to three
inches of rain. Thunderstorms produced golf ball size
hail at Roundup MT, Dazey ND and Protection KS.
In 2003 (30th-Sept. 1) Seven vehicles were swept off of the KS
Turnpike, with 4 fatalities...due to flash flooding.
Rainfall totals over much of Indiana ranged from 6-10
inches.
In 2012 Tropical Storm Leslie formed in the Atlantic basin. This
is the second earliest formation of the 12th named storm
in a season on record, eclipsed only by Luis in 1995.

In 1926 A hurricane came inland near Daytona Beach FL. The
hurricane caused 2.5 million dollars damage in eastern
Florida, including the Jacksonville area.
In 1939 The temperature at Lewiston ID hit 117 degrees to
establish an all-time record high for that location.
In 1943 On a whim, and flying a single engine AT-6, Lieutenant
Ralph O' Hair and Colonel Duckworth were the first to fly
into a hurricane. It started regular Air Force flights
into hurricanes.
In 1987 Thunderstorms in Minnesota spawned a tornado which moved
in a southwesterly direction for a distance of thirty
miles across Rice and Goodhue counties. Trees were
uprooted and tossed about like toys, and a horse lifted
by the tornado was observed sailing horizontally through
the air. Thunderstorms drenched La Crosse WI with 5.26
inches of rain, their second highest 24 hour total of
record.
In 1988 Hot weather prevailed in the north central U.S.
Williston ND reported a record high of 108 degrees.
Thunderstorms produced severe weather in the eastern
U.S., and in southeastern Texas. Richland County SC was
soaked with up to 5.5 inches of rain.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced locally heavy rains in the
southwestern U.S. Yuma AZ experienced their most severe
thunderstorm of record. Strong thunderstorm winds, with
unofficial gusts as high as 95 mph, reduced visibilities
to near zero in blowing dust and sand. Yuma got nearly
as much rain in one hour as is normally received in an
entire year. The storm total of 2.55 inches of rain was
a record 24 hour total for July. Property damage due to
flash flooding and high winds was in the millions.
Thunderstorms produced severe weather from Wisconsin and
northern Illinois to New England, with 103 reports of
large hail and damaging winds through the day.
Thunderstorms in Wisconsin produced hail three inches in
diameter near Oshkosh, and wind gusts to 65 mph at
Germantown.
In 2003 Thunderstorms brought heavy rain and significant flooding
to northeast Ohio and Pennsylvania. Over 100 people were
evacuated in Ohio, and several others in Pennsylvania.
A bridge collapsed in Hubbard Township (Trumbell County,
Ohio), and water was up to 6 feet deep in Youngstown, OH.

In 1856 The Isle Derniere (Last Island) disaster occurred off the
coast of Louisiana. A storm tide drowned 140 vacationers
as a five foot wave swept over Low Island during a
hurricane.
In 1882 Sandusky OH noted a four minute snow squall during the
morning, frost was reported in the suburbs of Chicago,
and a killing frost was reported at Cresco IA.
In 1898 The temperature at Pendleton OR climbed all the way to
119 degrees at set a state record.
In 1924 Colorado's deadliest tornado killed a woman and nine
children in one house along its twenty-mile path east
southeast of Thurman. Mennonite men had left the farm to
provide possible aid, as the 200-yard wide storm was
first seen while far away.
In 1936 The temperature soared to 114 degrees at Plain Dealing
LA, and reached 120 degrees at Ozark AR, to establish
record highs for those two states.
In 1980 Hurricane Allen came ashore above Brownsville TX dropping
fifteen inches of rain near San Antonio, and up to 20
inches in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Tidal flooding
occurred along the South Texas coast. Hurricane Allen
packed winds to 150 mph, and also spawned twenty-nine
tornadoes. Total damage from the storm was estimated at
750 million dollars.
In 1987 Unseasonably hot weather continued in the southeastern
U.S. Ten cities in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina
reported record high temperatures for the date. Macon GA
hit 101 degrees. A tropical depression deluged
southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana with
torrential rains.
In 1988 Citizens of Bluefield WV, where the Chamber of Commerce
provides free lemonade on days when the temperature warms
into the 90s, were able to celebrate their record high of
90 degrees. Eight other cities also reported record high
temperatures for the date, including Bismarck ND with a
reading of 102 degrees.
In 1989 Thirty-eight cities in the south central and southeastern
U.S. reported record low temperatures for the date,
including Asheville NC with a reading of 48 degrees, and
Victoria TX with a low of 63 degrees. Oklahoma City OK
reported a record cool afternoon high of 71 degrees, and
the daily high of 64 degrees at Raleigh NC established a
record for August. In Arizona, a record sixty-four day
streak of 100 degree days at Phoenix came to an end.
In 2003 (9th-10th) Record heat was observed across much of Europe,
with the degree high in London the first time that the
temperature had eclipsed the century mark there. Roth,
Germany had a record high of 105 degrees.
In 2012 At least 13 people were killed, and 20 wounded, when
lightning struck a makeshift mosque in a remote village
in northeast Bangladesh.
In 2020 An intense derecho traveled from southeast South Dakota
all the way to Ohio...770 miles in 14 hours. It flipped
trucks, smashed a grain elevator, and produced numerous
wind gusts over 100 mph in parts of Iowa. At Midway, IA,
a gust to 112 mph was noted. There was extensive
structural and tree damage about ten miles away in Cedar
Rapids, IA. Incredibly, at least half of the city's trees
were lost. The Warning Coordination Meteorologist (and
twenty three year veteran) at the National Weather Service
in the Quad Cities said this during an interview with a
local television station: "I can't recall a similar
incident. Usually the peak intensity is over relatively
quickly. With this they just persisted and persisted."
The state suffered large agricultural losses, with millions
of acres of corn flattened. The storms also tore through
Chicago, IL with 70 to 90 mph winds. Over a million power
outages occurred in the two state area. One location in
Iowa measured a gust to 140 mph, the equivalent of a
category 4 hurricane.

In 1949 Lightning hit a baseball game in Florida, digging a 20 foot
trench in the infield, and instantly killing the shortstop
and 3rd baseman.
In 1976 A stationary thunderstorm produced more than ten inches
of rain which funneled into the narrow Thompson River
Canyon of northeastern Colorado. A wall of water six to
eight feet high wreaked a twenty-five mile path of
destruction from Estes Park to Loveland killing
156 persons. The flash flood caught campers, and caused
extensive structural and highway damage. Ten miles of
U.S. Highway 34 were totally destroyed as the river was
twenty feet higher than normal at times.
In 1986 The temperature at Little Rock AR soared to 112 degrees.
Morrilton AR hit 115 degrees, and daily highs for the
month averaged 102 degrees.
In 1987 The deadliest tornado in 75 years struck Edmonton,
Alberta, killing 26 persons and injuring 200 others. The
twister caused more than 75 million dollars damage along
its nineteen mile path, leaving 400 families homeless.
At the Evergreen Mobile Home Park, up to 200 of the 720
homes were flattened by the tornado.
Afternoon highs of 106 at Aberdeen SD, and 102 at Ottumwa
IA and Rapid City SD, were records for the date. It
marked the seventh straight day of 100 degree heat for
Rapid City. Baltimore MD reported a record twenty-two
days of 90 degree weather in July. Evening thunderstorms
produced golf ball size hail at Lemmon SD and wind gusts
to 80 mph at Beulah ND.
In 1988 Twenty-one cities in the north central U.S. reported
record high temperatures for the date, including Sioux
City IA with a reading of 107 degrees. The reading of
105 degrees at Minneapolis MN was their hottest since
1936. Pierre SD and Chamberlain SD, with highs of
108 degrees, were just one degree shy of the hot spot in
the nation, Palm Springs CA.
In 1989 Overnight thunderstorms soaked eastern Kansas and western
Missouri with heavy rain, with 4.5 inches reported at
Nevada MO. Evening thunderstorms in Oklahoma produced
wind gusts to 75 mph at Covington. Six cities in the
north central U.S. reported record high temperatures for
the date, including Williston ND with a reading of 105
degrees.
In 2011 A rare tornado struck Blagoveshchensk, Russia, killing
one person, injuring nearly 30. Nearly 100 homes lost
lost their roofs, and 15o cars were damaged.

In 1954 Mount Rainier in Washington State was still covered with
sixteen inches of snow at the 5500 foot level following
a big snow season.
In 1985 A nearly stationary thunderstorm deluged Cheyenne WY with
rain and hail. Six inches of rain fell in six hours
producing the most damaging flash flood of record for the
state. Two to five feet of hail covered the ground
following the storm, which claimed twelve lives, and
caused 65 million dollars property damage.
In 1986 A powerful thunderstorm produced 100 mph winds and large
hail in eastern Kansas and southwestern Missouri causing
71 million dollars damage, and injuring nineteen persons.
It was one of the worst thunderstorms of record for
Kansas. Crops were mowed to the ground in places and
roofs blown off buildings along its path, 150 miles long
and 30 miles wide, from near Abilene to southeast of
Pittsburg.
In 1987 Record heat gripped parts of the Midwest. A dozen cities
reported record high temperatures for the date, including
Lincoln NE with a reading of 105 degrees, Moline IL with
a high of 103 degrees, and Burlington IA with a reading
of 102 degrees.
In 1988 Two dozen cities in the Upper Midwest reported record
high temperatures for the date, including La Crosse WI
with a reading of 105 degrees. Highs of 103 degrees at
Milwaukee WI and South Bend IN were records for the month
of August.
In 1989 Hurricane Chantal made landfall along the Upper Texas
coast about sunrise. Chantal deluged parts of Galveston
Island and southeastern Texas with 8 to 12 inches of
rain. Unofficial totals ranged up to twenty inches.
Winds gusted to 82 mph at Galveston, and reached 76 mph
in the Houston area. Tides were 5 to 7 feet high. The
hurricane claimed two lives, and caused 100 million
dollars damage.

In 1954 Severe thunderstorms produced golf ball size hail for
thirty minutes in north central Kansas. One drift
measured 200 feet long, seventy feet wide and three feet
deep.
In 1975 Record heat gripped New England. Afternoon highs of 104
degrees at Providence RI, and 107 degrees at Chester MA
and New Bedford MA, established state records. The heat
along the coast of Maine was unprecedented, with highs of
101 degrees at Bar Harbor and 104 degrees at Jonesboro.
In 1987 Hot weather continued in the central U.S. Fifteen cities
reported record high temperatures for the date, including
Concordia KS with a reading of 106 degrees, and Downtown
Kansas City MO with a high of 105 degrees. Evening
thunderstorms produced severe weather in the Ohio Valley
and the north central U.S. Thunderstorms in South Dakota
produced wind gusts to 70 mph at Philip, and hail two
inches in diameter at Faulkton.
In 1988 Searing heat continued from the Middle and Upper
Mississippi Valley to the Middle and Northern Atlantic
Coast States. Twenty-six cities reported record high
temperatures for the date. Chicago IL reported a record
seven days of 100 degree heat for the year.
In 1989 Low pressure representing the remains of Hurricane
Chantal deluged north central Texas with heavy rain. Up
to 6.5 inches drenched Stephens County, and Wichita Falls
reported 2.22 inches of rain in just 1 hour. Bismarck, ND
reported a record warm morning low of 75 degrees, and
record hot afternoon high of 101 degrees, and evening
thunderstorms in North Dakota produced wind gusts to 78
mph at Lakota. Early evening thunderstorms in Florida
produced high winds which downed trees at Christmas.
In 2022 Southern Illinois was drenched by 8 to 12 inches of rain
in 12 hours. An area just south of Newton, IL, recorded
14 inches of rainfall in just 12 hours.

record breaking 3.01 inches in one hour at DFW airport.

In 1885 A tornado hit Philadelphia and Camden along its eight
mile path.
In 1970 Hurricane Celia struck the coast of Texas producing wind
gusts to 161 mph at Corpus Christi, and estimated wind
gusts of 180 mph at Arkansas Pass. The hurricane was the
most destructive of record along the Texas coast causing
454 million dollars damage, and also claimed 11 lives.
In 1987 A severe thunderstorm moved across Cheyenne WY about mid
afternoon. The thunderstorm produced hailstones up to
two inches in diameter causing more than 37 million
dollars damage. The eastern U.S. sweltered in the heat.
A dozen cities reported record high temperatures for the
date, including Paducah KY with a reading of 102 degrees.
Beckley WV established an all-time record high of 93
degrees.
In 1988 Thunderstorms developing ahead of a slow moving cold
front produced severe weather from the Central High
Plains to the Upper Great Lakes Region. Thunderstorms
around Fort Collins CO produced wind gusts to 74 mph
along with marble size hail. Sixteen persons were
injured in the storm, most of whom were accidently locked
out of their office building, having evacuated it when
the fire alarm went off, apparently triggered by
lightning.
In 1989 Thunderstorms representing what remained of Hurricane
Chantal drenched Wichita KS with 2.20 inches of rain
in four hours during the early morning. Thunderstorms
developing in the north central U.S. during the afternoon
produced wind gusts to 85 mph at Baudette MN, and
softball size hail at Lake Kabetogama, during the
vening. Jamestown ND reported a record hot afternoon
high of 103 degrees.
In 2004 (3rd-4th) Hurricane Alex, with 100 mph winds, lashed the
outer banks of the Carolinas. However, the center of the
storm remained offshore, sparing the outer banks from more
damage. Much of the same area was still recovering from
Hurricane Isabel that struck last year. Alex strengthened
to a peak of 120 mph on the 4th, but by then, the hurricane
was only a threat to shipping. However, he became the
strongest major hurricane on record to develop north of
38 degrees north latitude, with Hurricane Ellen in 1973
coming in second at 115 mph. These are the only 2 storms
to reach major hurricane strength at such a high latitude.
In 2011 Little Rock, Arkansas set an all time record high
temperature, with a reading of 114 degrees. The National
Weather Service in North Little Rock tied its all time
record high, with a reading of 111 degrees. Several
record high temperatures were set across Arkansas, and
Newport reached a scalding heat index of 126 degrees.

In 1940 A major hurricane struck Savannnah GA and Charleston SC
causing the worst inland flooding since 1607.
In 1944 The temperature at Burlington VT soared to an all-time
record high of 101 degrees.
In 1968 A young girl in a lake was injured when a dust devil near
Bristol, Connecticut, carried a 150 pound roof covering a
picnic area into the lake.
In 1980 Clouds and moisture from Hurricane Allen provided a brief
break from the torrid Texas heatwave, with daily highs
mostly in the 70s to lower 90s.
In 1987 An early evening thunderstorm in Wyoming produced hail up
to two inches in diameter from Alva to Hulett. Snow
plows had to be used to clear Highway 24 south of Hulett,
where hail formed drifts two feet deep.
In 1988 Moisture from what remained of Tropical Storm Beryl
resulted in torrential rains across eastern Texas.
Twelve and a half inches of rain deluged Enterprise TX,
which was more than the amount received there during the
previous eight months. Philadelphia PA reported a record
forty-four days of 90 degree weather for the year.
Baltimore MD and Newark NJ reported a record fourteen
straight days of 90 degree heat.
In 1989 One of the most severe convective outbreaks of record
came to a climax in southern California after four days.
Thunderstorms deluged Benton CA with six inches of rain
two days in a row, and flooding which resulted caused
more than a million dollars damage to homes and highways.
Thunderstorms around Yellowstone Park WY produced four
inches of rain in 20 minutes resulting in 15 mudslides.
Thunderstorms over Long Island NY drenched Suffolk County
with 8 to 10 inches of rain. Twenty-three cities in the
southeastern U.S. reported record low temperatures for
the date. It was, for some cities, the fourth straight
morning of record cold temperatures.
In 1999 A rare F2 tornado strikes downtown Salt Lake City, Utah;
causing extensive damage, injuries, and some fatalities.
It was the first tornado death ever in the state of Utah.

In 1814 A tornado struck Washington, DC. While causing damage to
much of the city, the damage blocked exit routes from
invading British Troops that came into the city the day
before. The torrential rains from the severe thunderstorms
put out the raging fires that had been set by British
troops the day before.
In 1885 A severe hurricane struck South Carolina causing
1.3 million dollars damage at Charleston.
In 1940 New Jersey experienced its coldest August morning of
record, with lows of 32 degrees at Layton and
Charlotteburg.
In 1987 Morning thunderstorms produced heavy rain in eastern
Nebraska and southwestern Iowa. Stanton IA reported
10.50 inches of rain. Water was reported up to the
handle of automobiles west of Greenwood NE. Rainfall
totals for a two day period ranged from 7 to 14 inches
across southwestern Iowa. Crop damage was in the
millions for both states. Subsequent flooding of streams
in Iowa the last week of August caused millions of
dollars damage to crops, as some streams crested ten feet
above flood stage.
In 1988 Seven cities in California reported record high
temperatures for the date, including Sacramento with
an afternoon reading of 104 degrees. Thunderstorms
produced locally heavy rains in Arizona. Chino Valley
was drenched with 2.50 inches of rain in just thirty
minutes washing out a couple of streets in town.
In 1989 Morning thunderstorms drenched Spencer IN with 4.10
inches of rain in three hours causing extensive street
flooding. Evening thunderstorms in eastern Kansas
produced up to six inches of rain around Emporia, and
four inches of rain in just forty-five minutes near
Parsons, and also produced wind gusts to 70 mph at
Lake Melvern.
In 2017 Powerful Hurricane Harvey became a Category 4 hurricane
with 130 mph winds prior to landfall at Rockport, Texas.
It was the first Category 4 Hurricane to hit the U.S.
since Charley struck western Florida in 2004...and the
first Category 4 hurricane to hit Texas since Carla in
1961. He was forecast to dump from 3 to 5 feet of rain
Cfall in several areas of Texas and Louisiana, as the
steering currents around him collapsed, and he would
move very little in south Texas for several days.

In 1883 Krakatoa Volcano exploded in the East Indies. The
explosion was heard more than 2500 miles away, and every
barograph around the world recorded the passage of the
air wave, up to seven times. Giant waves, 125 feet high
and traveling 300 mph, devastated everything in their
path, hurling ashore coral blocks weighing up to 900
tons, and killing more than 36,000 persons. Volcanic ash
was carried around the globe in thirteen days producing
blue and green suns in the tropics, and then vivid red
sunsets in higher latitudes. The temperature of the
earth was lowered one degree for the next two years,
finally recovering to normal by 1888.
In 1949 A hurricane made landfall at Delray Beach. Winds reached
153 mph at the Jupiter Lighthouse before the anemometer
failed. The hurricane caused 45 million dollars damage
to crops. The hurricane also caught the Georgia and
South Carolina coast resulting in another two million
dollars damage.
In 1965 Severe thunderstorms associated with the invasion of
arctic air spawned tornadoes and produced 100 mph winds
in the Chicago area.
In 1976 A weak tornado touched down briefly in the Hockley Hills
near Kiana AK, about 29 miles north of the Arctic Circle.
In 1987 Showers and thunderstorms drenched northern Illinois
during the morning and afternoon hours pushing August
rainfall totals for Chicago, Moline and Peoria to new all-
time highs for any month of the year. By the end of
August, Chicago had received 17.10 inches of rain, which
easily surpassed their previous record of 14.17 inches
established in September 1961.
In 1988 A dozen cities in Texas, Colorado and California reported
record high temperatures for the date, including highs of
100 at Pueblo CO, 106 at Wichita Falls TX, and 109 at
Redding CA. Afternoon thunderstorms in Utah deluged the

In 1989 Anchorage AK was soaked with a steady rain, and the
24 hour total of 4.12 inches smashed their previous
24 hour precipitation total of 2.10 inches. It also
pushed their rainfall total for the month past the
previous August record.
In 1992 Hurricane Andrew made its second US landfall west-southwest
of Morgan City, Louisiana.
In 2003 (23rd-27th) Starting as a Tropical Storm, Ignacio became
the latest first hurricane for the season in the Eastern
Pacific basin. At its peak, it had 105 mph winds, but
drifted slowly toward Baja California, finally coming
on the 26th as a minimal hurricane. Rainfall totals were
over 20 inches in many places, with major flooding and
mudslides across areas of Baja California and northwest
Mexico, before dissipating over Baja California on the
27th. Typhoon Krovanh hit the Chinese province of Hainan
with heavy rains and strong winds, resulting in widespread
flooding, damage, and injuries.

In 1898 The temperature at Prineville OR soared to 119 degrees to
establish a state record, which was tied on the 10th of
August at Pendleton.
In 1905 Heavy rain in southwestern Connecticut caused a dam
break, and the resulting flood caused a quarter of
a million dollars damage at Bridgeport. As much as
eleven inches of rain fell prior to the flood.
In 1981 Fifty cattle, each weighing 800 pounds, were killed by
lightning near Vance AL. The lightning struck a tree and
then spread along the ground killing the cattle.
In 1987 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from Minnesota to
Indiana and Illinois. A thunderstorm at Janesville WI
produced wind gusts to 104 mph which flipped over two
airplanes, and blew another 300 feet down the runway.
The northeastern U.S. experienced some relief from the
heat. Nine cities reported record low temperatures for
the date, including Saint Johnsbury VT with a reading of
42 degrees. Barnet VT reported a morning low of
33 degrees, with frost on vegetation.
In 1988 Afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced severe
weather in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Hail three inches in
diameter was reported south of Saint Cloud MN. Hot
weather prevailed in the western U.S. Fresno CA reported
a record thirteen straight days of 100 degree heat.
In 1989 Morning thunderstorms in the Upper Midwest produced more
than five inches of rain west of Virgil SD. Afternoon
and evening thunderstorms deluged the foothills and
adjacent plains of Colorado with heavy rain. Rains of
six to seven and a half inches fell in eight hours north
of Greeley. Hail and heavy rain caused several million
dollars damage in Weld County.
In 2003 Monsoon rains triggered landslides, snapped electricity
cables, and inundated a large part of South Asia. The
heaviest 1-day rain in 25 years pummeled Karachi,
Pakistan, with 4 inches of rain, leaving 14 dead.

Indians in the Yellowstone Valley, and killed many ponies.
In 1949 The state record for Connecticut was established when the
town of Greenville registered an afternoon high of 102
degrees.
In 1965 The temperature at Portland OR reached 107 degrees to
equal their all-time record high.
In 1979 A forty-minute hailstorm bombed Fort Collins CO with
baseball to softball size hail. 2500 automobiles and
2000 homes were damaged, and about 25 persons were
injured, mainly when hit on the head by the huge stones.
A three month old baby died later of injuries.
In 1987 Afternoon highs of 105 at Aberdeen SD, 102 at Bismarck
ND, and 102 at Pueblo CO, were records for the date.
Pueblo CO reported just .09 inch of rain for the first

In 1988 A dozen cities in the north central and northeastern U.S.
reported record high temperatures for the date. Downtown
Baltimore MD hit 103 degrees, marking a record eight days
of 100 degree heat for the month, and ten for the year.
The high of 101 degrees at Billings MT marked a record
seventeen days of 100 degree heat for the year.
Thunderstorms produced severe weather in the northeastern
U.S., with nearly fifty reports of large hail or damaging
winds in Pennsylvania and New York State. A tree fell on
a car at Erie PA injuring four persons.
In 1989 Morning thunderstorms over central Missouri deluged
Columbia with 5.98 inches of rain causing flash flooding.
Daytime thunderstorms in Kentucky drenched Paducah with
1.73 inches of rain in less than half an hour. Evening
thunderstorms in the north central U.S. produced wind
gusts to 78 mph east of Moccasin MT.

In 1890 Thunderstorms left four inches of hail covering the
ground in Adair and Union Counties in Iowa. The hail
drifted into six foot mounds, and in some places remained
on the ground for twenty-six days.
In 1918 Unusually hot weather began to overspread the Atlantic
Coast States, from the Carolinas to southern New England.
The temperature soared to an all-time record high of 106
degrees at Washington D.C., and Cumberland and
Keedysville hit 109 degrees to establish a state record
for Maryland. Temperatures were above normal east of the
Rockies that month, with readings much above normal in
the Lower Missouri Valley. Omaha NE reached 110 degrees.
In 1959 A bucket survey showed that thunderstorms dropped
16.70 inches of rain on parts of Decatur County IA. The
total was accepted as Iowa's 24 hour rainfall record.
In 1986 Evening thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 100 mph at
Winner SD damaging two hundred homes.
In 1987 Afternoon thunderstorms deluged Milwaukee WI with
6.84 inches of rain, including more than five inches in
two hours, breaking all previous rainfall records for the
city. Floodwaters were four feet deep at the Milwaukee
County Stadium, and floodwaters filled the basement of
the main terminal at the airport. Flooding caused 5.9
million dollars damage, and claimed the life of one
person. Death Valley CA reported a morning low of
97 degrees. A midday thunderstorm deluged Birmingham AL
with nearly six inches of rain in one hour.
In 1988 Severe thunderstorms produced large hail and damaging
winds in Pennsylvania and New York State. A cold front
crossing the northwestern U.S. produced wind gusts to 66
mph at Livingston MT.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front produced
severe weather from northwestern Texas to the Southern
Appalachians, and in the northeastern U.S. There were
136 reports of large hail or damaging winds during the
day and evening. Thunderstorms in the Southern Plains
produced tennis ball size hail northwest of Buffalo OK,
and wind gusts to 100 mph at Pampa TX.

In 1925 During the late morning hours a severe hailstorm struck
southeastern Iowa completely destroying crops along a
path six to ten miles wide and 75 miles long. The hail
also injured and killed poultry and livestock, and caused
a total of 2.5 million dollars damage. The hailstorm
flattened fields of corn to such an extent that many had
to leave their farms in search of other work. It was one
of the worst hailstorms of record for the nation.
In 1983 Hurricane Alicia ravaged southeastern Texas. The
hurricane caused more than three billion dollars property
damage, making it one of the costliest hurricanes in the
history of the U.S. Just thirteen persons were killed,
but 1800 others were injured. The hurricane packed winds
to 130 mph as it crossed Galveston Island, and spawned
twenty-two tornadoes in less than 24 hours as it made
landfall.
In 1987 Thirteen cities in the eastern U.S. reported record high
temperatures for the date, including Orlando FL with a
reading of 98 degrees, and Portland ME with a high of 94
degrees. Newark NJ reached 90 degrees for the thirty-
sixth time of the year, their second highest total of
record.
In 1988 Twenty-two cities, from the Carolinas to the Upper Ohio
Valley, reported record high temperatures for the date,
pushing the total number of daily record highs since the
first of June above the 1100 mark. Afternoon highs of
102 at Greensboro NC and 105 at Raleigh NC equalled all-
time records. Evening thunderstorms in Montana produced
wind gusts to 75 mph at Scobey.
In 1989 Thunderstorms over the Middle Atlantic Coast Region
and the Upper Ohio Valley produced torrential rains in
eastern Virginia during the late morning and afternoon
hours. Totals ranged up to 12 inches at Yorktown.
Williamsburg VA was deluged with 10.78 inches of rain
between 6 AM and 10 AM, with 6.72 inches reported in just
two hours. Flash flooding caused nearly twelve million
dollars damage in Accomack County VA. Early evening
thunderstorms in the Central High Plains Region produced
walnut size hail and wind gusts to 80 mph around Casper WY.
Thunderstorms produced locally heavy rains in the
Yellowstone Park area, causing fifteen mudslides.
In 2011 Severe thunderstorms caused widespread damage at Omaha,
Nebraska. At the airport, baseball sized hail damaged
several planes, and portions of an airport concourse.
The downburst winds of 100 mph pushed a jetway into a
plane, injuring a pilot, and another pilot was injured
after being struck by hail. Many vehicles at the airport
also suffered hail damage. The airport was closed for a
time, due to the severe weather, affecting over 2700
passengers. Elsewhere, the third massive dust storm in
months hit the Phoenix, Arizona area. This storm was
as much as 60 miles wide and 4000 feet high. The airport
was once again closed for a time. Numerous traffic
accidents occurred due to the low visibility.

In 1788 A small but powerful hurricane inflicted great havoc upon
forests along a narrow track from New Jersey to Maine.
A similar storm track today would cause extreme disaster
in the now populated area.
In 1969 'Never say die' Camille let loose a cloudburst in
Virginia resulting in flash floods and landslides which
killed 151 persons and cause 140 million dollars damage.
Massies Hill VA received 27 inches of rain.
In 1986 The temperature at San Antonio TX soared to an all-time
record high of 108 degrees.
In 1987 Thunderstorms moving out of southeastern Nebraska spread
severe weather into eastern Kansas and western Missouri
during the day. Thunderstorms in Nebraska produced hail
three inches in diameter at Albion, and high winds which
downed a large tent at Waterloo injuring a dozen persons.
Thunderstorms in Kansas produced baseball size hail
northwest of Topeka, and wind gusts to 80 mph at Fulton.
Ten persons were injured in a thunderstorm at Princeton
KS, and damage to crops in southern Franklin County KS
was estimated at 3.5 million dollars.
In 1988 Raleigh NC reported a record hot temperature reading
of 103 degrees. Afternoon thunderstorms in Oklahoma
produced wind gusts to 75 mph in southern Pittsburgh
County. Thunderstorms in Indiana produced 4.50 inches of
rain at Morgantown.
In 1989 Early morning thunderstorms deluged southeastern Delaware
with six to ten inches of rain in four to six hours, with
local reports of 13 to 20 inches of rain. Twenty-six
major roads were closed or damaged, and fourteen bridges
were washed out. Flooding caused nearly four million
dollars damage to local businesses.
In 1991 Hurricane Bob roared ashore at Newport, Rhode Island.
2.1 million homes and businesses lost power.

In 1886 The town of Indianola TX was completely destroyed by a
hurricane, and never rebuilt.
In 1910 The "big blow up" of forest fires finally came to an end
in Idaho. A record dry August fueled 1736 fires which
burned three million acres destroying six billion board
feet of timber. The fires claimed the lives of 85
persons, 78 of which were fire fighters, and consumed the
entire town of Wallace. The smoke spread a third of the
way around the world producing some dark days in the U.S.
and Canada. The forest fires prompted federal fire
protection laws.
In 1987 Half a dozen cities in the Central Plains Region reported
record high temperatures for the date, including Pueblo
CO with a reading of 102 degrees, and Goodland KS with a
high of 104 degrees. Hill City KS reached 106 degrees.
In 1988 Sheridan WY reported a record hot temperature reading of
100 degrees. Evening thunderstorms produced golf ball
size hail near Fortuna ND, and wind gusts to 70 mph near
Webster SD.
In 1989 Early morning thunderstorms produced heavy rain in
southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma, with up to
six inches reported around Tulsa OK. Some roads in the
Tulsa area were closed by water 10 to 12 feet deep.
Evening thunderstorms produced severe weather in northern
Oklahoma and southern Kansas. Thunderstorms produced
winds gusts to 75 mph in Major County OK, and hail two
inches in diameter at Jennings KS.
In 1991 In South Dakota, a 3 AM electrical storm was so bright,
a civil defense director was able to drive 10 minutes
without his headlights.

In 1904 A flash flood near Pueblo CO washed a train from the
tracks killing 89 passengers. A bridge, weakened by the
floodwaters sweeping through the valley below, gave way
under the weight of the train dashing all but the
sleeping cars into the torrent drowning the occupants.
Rail service was frequently interrupted in the Rocky
Mountain Region and southwestern U.S. that summer due to
numerous heavy downpours which washed out the railroad
beds delaying trains as much as five days.
In 1918 Philadelphia PA established an all-time record with a
high of 106 degrees. New York City experienced its
warmest day and night with a low of 82 degrees and a high
of 102 degrees. Highs of 108 degrees at Flemington NJ
and Somerville NJ established state records for the month
of August.
In 1984 El Paso TX normally receives 1.21 inches of rain in
August. They got it in forty-five minutes, with four
more inches to boot, during a storm which left Downtown
El Paso under five feet of water.
In 1986 A rare outbreak of seven tornadoes occurred in New
England. One tornado carved its way through Cranston RI
and Providence RI causing twenty injuries. Rhode Island
had not reported a tornado in twelve years, and three
touched down in 24 hours.
In 1987 Morning thunderstorms drenched Goldsboro NC with 3.37
inches of rain. Late morning thunderstorms in Arizona
produced dime size hail, wind gusts to 50 mph, and two
inches of rain, at Sierra Vista.
In 1988 A dozen cities in the central U.S. reported record high
temperatures for the date, including Waco TX with a
reading of 107 degrees. The record high of 88 degrees at
Marquette MI was their 23rd of the year. Afternoon and
evening thunderstorms produced severe weather in
Nebraska, Minnesota and Wisconsin, with wind gusts to 81
mph reported at McCool NE.
In 1989 Forty cities in the central U.S. reported record low
temperatures for the date, including Valentine NE with a
reading of 40 degrees, and Belcourt ND with a low of 37
degrees. Martin SD was the cold spot in the nation with
a morning low of 30 degrees. Unseasonably hot weather
prevailed over Florida and Washington State, with record
highs of 100 at Daytona Beach FL, 101 at Walla Walla WA,
and 103 degrees at Hanford WA.
In 2003 A tornado touched down in the Riviera Beach area of Palm
Beach County, Florida. There was no warning of the
tornado, which caused a Pepsi plant to lose part of its
roof. Five hundred homes were damaged or destroyed. It
skipped right over Interstate 95 at rush hour...amazingly,
there were no injuries or fatalities from the tornado.
In 2011 Scattered severe thunderstorms developed across Arkansas,
with several reports of hail and wind damage. Golfball
sized hail fell near Russell, Arkansas, and a 77 mph wind
was recorded at Little Rock National Airport, from a
severe thunderstorm moving through the area.
In 2022 The weather monitoring stations run by Denver's Mile High
Flood District east of downtown near the zoo measured
Sunday night surged at 1.42 inches in 20 minutes, 1.3
inches in 15 minutes, and 1.76 inches in 26 minutes.

South Carolina drowning more than 1000 persons in a tidal
surge at Charleston.
In 1964 Hurricane Cleo battered Miami and the South Florida area.
It was the first direct hit for Miami in fourteen years.
Winds gusted to 135 mph, and the hurricane caused 125
million dollars damage.
In 1970 Elko NV was deluged with 3.66 inches of rain in just one
hour, establishing a state record.
In 1987 Washington D.C. soared to a record hot 100 degrees, while
clouds and rain to the north kept temperatures in the 50s
in central and southeastern New York State.
In 1988 Afternoon thunderstorms produced locally heavy rains in
the southwestern U.S. Thunderstorms in eastern
New Mexico produced wind gusts to 75 mph near the
White Sands Missile Range, and produced three inches
of rain in two hours near the town of Belen.
In 1989 Afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced severe
weather in southeastern Nebraska, eastern Kansas and
Missouri. Thunderstorms produced baseball size hail
south of Belleville KS, and tennis ball size hail south
of Lincoln NE. Thunderstorms produced golf ball size
hail and wind gusts to 70 mph at Saint Joseph MO.
Thunderstorms in North Dakota deluged the town of Linton
with six inches of rain in one hour.
In 2011 (27th-28th) After lashing the Bahamas days earlier with
120 mph winds, Hurricane Irene made landfall near Cape
Lookout, North Carolina, with 85 mph winds. The next
day, she made landfall near Little Egg Inlet, New Jersey,
as a minimal hurricane (75 mph winds), and passed over
New York City as a 65 mph Tropical Storm. Widespread
damage, storm surge flooding, and tornadoes, occured in
her path. Irene was only the second hurricane to hit New
Jersey since 1851, and Vermont was particularly hard hit.

In 1898 Torrents of rain accompanied by a furious wind upset the
rain gage at Fort Mohave AZ. However, water in a wash
tub set out on the mesa, clear of everything, measured
eight inches after the 45 minute storm.
In 1911 Saint George GA was deluged with 18.00 inches of rain in
24 hours to establish a state record.
In 1959 Lieutenant Colonel William Rankin bailed out of his plane
at a height of 46,000 feet into a violent thunderstorm,
and lived to write about the 45 minute journey (which
normally would have been a thirteen minute descent). He
described it as one of the most bizarre and painful
experiences imaginable.
In 1971 Heavy rains from Tropical Storm Doria caused devastating
floods in central and northeastern New Jersey resulting
in 138 million dollars damage. In southeastern
Pennsylvania, high winds downed trees and power lines,
and in New York City, heavy rains flooded streets and
subways.
In 1986 The temperature at Apalachicola FL dipped to 62 degrees
to shatter their previous August record by four degrees,
having tied their August record high of 99 degrees on the
2nd of the month.
In 1987 Severe thunderstorms broke the heat in the southeastern
U.S. and the Gulf Coast Region, but not before seven
cities reported record high temperatures for the date.
The severe thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 80 mph
downing large trees around Horse Shoe NC, and pelted
southeast Meridian MS with hail two inches in diameter.
In 1988 Tropical Storm Chris spawned a tornado near Manning SC
which killed one person, and spawned three tornadoes in
North Carolina. Chris produced one to two foot tides,
and three to six inch rains, over coastal South Carolina.
Severe thunderstorms in New York State and Vermont,
developing ahead of a cold front, spawned a tornado which
killed one person at Hector NY, and produced tennis ball
size hail at Brandon VT, and wind gusts to 80 mph at
Lyndonville VT.
In 1989 Early morning thunderstorms in Nebraska produced 4.50
inches of rain around McCook, and 4.65 inches around
Auburn and Brownville. Showers in Montana pushed the
rainfall total for the month at Havre past the previous
August record of 3.90 inches.
In 2012 After affecting the Windward and Leeward Islands, the
Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, and Florida (especially)
the Keys), Hurricane Isaac made landfall in Plaquemines
Parish, just southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi
River, with 80 mph winds. A storm surge of up to 12 feet
occurred to the right of where Isaac made landfall. The
remnants headed across Arkansas, then north into Missouri,
and eventually the Ohio Valley. Isaac brought flooding
rains and tornadoes to many areas. He made a second
landfall along the coast of Louisiana just west of Port
Fourchon, with 80 mph winds (28th-29th).

In 1918 A single bolt of lightning struck 504 sheep dead in their
tracks at the Wasatch National Forest in Utah. Sheep
often herd together in storms, and as a result the shock
from the lightning bolt was passed from one animal to
another.
In 1986 Hurricane Estelle passed 120 miles south of the Hawaiian
Islands creating a ten to twenty foot surf. The large
swells resulted from a combination of high tides, a full
moon, and 50 mph winds. The hurricane also deluged Oahu
Island with up to 6.86 inches of rain on the 24th and
25th of the month.
In 1987 Barrow AK receives 1.38 inches in 24 hours, an all-time
record for that location. The average annual precip-
itation for Barrow is just 4.75 inches. (21st-22nd)
Thunderstorms in Montana produced 4 to 6 inches of rain
in Glacier County causing extensive flooding along Divide
Creek. Missoula MT received 1.71 inches of rain in 24
hours, a record for the month of July.
In 1988 Six cities in the south central U.S. reported record low
temperatures for the date, including Pueblo CO with a
reading of 48 degrees. Thunderstorms over the Atlantic
Coast Region drenched Wilmington NC with 6.49 inches of
rain in about eight hours.
In 1989 Showers and thunderstorms prevailed across the
southeastern third of the country. Afternoon thunder-
storms in Florida produced wind gusts to 86 mph at
Zephyrhills, and gusts to 92 mph at Carrollwood and Lutz.
Thunderstorm winds gusting to 69 mph at Crystal Lake
damaged nineteen mobile homes.
In 2003 For the third time in two weeks, severe thunderstorms
again roared across Arkansas and the mid-south, with
widespread wind damage. Memphis, TN had heavy damage
in the downtown area, with straight line winds of 100
miles per hour reported by storm spotters.
In 2010 Severe storms struck much of the northeast United States,
including 4 tornadoes in Maine, and 3 in Connecticut.
In 2017 Eight tropical cyclones simultaneously were in the North
Pacific Ocean (east and west of the International Date
Line, the first time that has happened in over 40 years.
In 2020 Tropical Storm Gonzalo becomes the earliest "G" storm in
the Atlantic Basin, beating Gert by 2 days.

In 1788 A weather diary kept by George Washington recorded that
the center of a hurricane passed directly over his Mount
Vernon home. The hurricane crossed eastern North
Carolina and Virginia before moving into the Central
Appalachians. Norfolk VA reported houses destroyed,
trees uprooted, and crops leveled to the ground.
In 1898 A two hour thunderstorm deluged Atlanta GA with
4.32 inches of rain. More than a foot of water flooded
Union Depot. Many street car motors burned out while
trying to run through flooded streets. It grew so dark
before the afternoon storm that gas lights were needed.
In 1923 Sheridan WY was drenched with 4.41 inches of rain, an all-
time 24 hour record for that location. Associated
flooding washed out 20 miles of railroad track. (22nd-
23rd)
In 1987 Thunderstorms produced a record ten inches of rain in six
and a half hours at Minneapolis MN, including 5.26 inches
in two hours. Flash flooding claimed two lives and
caused 21.3 million dollars damage. Streets in
Minneapolis became rushing rivers, parking lots became
lakes, and storm sewers spouted like geysers. A tornado
hit Maple Grove MN causing five million dollars damage.
Baseball size hail was reported at Olivia MN.
In 1988 Thunderstorms produced severe weather in Lower Michigan
and northern Ohio, over eastern sections of the Dakotas,
and over the Central High Plains Region. Showers and
thunderstorms soaked Wilmington NC with another two
inches of rain, following six and a half inches the
previous day.
In 1989 Morning thunderstorms in the central U.S. drenched
central Oklahoma with up to six inches of rain.
Afternoon thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 85 mph at
Fort Smith AR. Evening thunderstorms over Florida
spawned a tornado which touched down three times in south
Fort Myers causing nearly three quarters of a million
dollars damage.
In 2010 Torrential rains around Chicago caused massive flooding,
filling some basements with up to 4 feet of water. Also,
a new record for a hailstone in the U.S. was set at
Vivian, South Dakota. The stone was 8 inches in diameter,
and 18.625 inches in circumference, weighing in at one
pound, fifteen ounces!! Several hailstones from the same
severe thunderstorm exceeded 6 inches in diameter!!
In 2020 Tropical Storm Hanna is the earliest 8th storm on record
in the Atlantic Basin. The previous record was in 2005
when Harvey formed on August 3rd.

In 1886 Rain fell at Lawrence KS for the first time in four
weeks. Rain fell over much of the state of Kansas that
day relieving a severe drought which began in May. The
very dry weather ruined crops in Kansas.
In 1942 The temperature at Las Vegas NV hit 117 degrees to set an
all-time record for that location.
In 1947 One of the most powerful strokes of lightning ever
measured yielded 345,000 amperes of electricity in
Pittsburgh PA.
In 1952 The temperature at Louisville GA soared to 112 degrees to
establish a state record.
In 1980 Claudette, a weak tropical storm, deluged southeastern
Texas with torrential rains. The Houston suburb of Alvin
received 43 inches, a 24 hour record for the U.S.
In 1987 Twenty-one cities in the eastern U.S. reported record
high temperatures for the date. The high of 91 at
Beckley WV was their hottest reading in 25 years of
records, and marked their third straight day of record 90
degree heat. Bakersfield CA dipped to 60 degrees,
marking their eighth straight morning of record cool
weather.
In 1988 Afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced large hail
and damaging winds in Oklahoma, and over Nebraska and
Wisconsin. Thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 75 mph
at Brainerd NE.
In 1989 Afternoon thunderstorms produced some flash flooding in
New Mexico. Albuquerque NM was deluged with an inch and
a half of rain in forty minutes. Evening thunderstorms
soaked White Pine PA with two inches of rain in one hour.
Quiet weather prevailed across the rest of the nation, as
"Mother Nature" took a brief summer vacation.
In 1999 A waterspout on Bull Shoals Lake in northern Arkansas, came
onshore, and became a tornado at Diamond City before
dissipating. The tornado was weak, but caused considerable
damage to trailers and boat docks, as well as downing and
snapping trees. 26 people were injured by the tornado.
In 2003 (21st-24th) Typhoon Imbudo, with winds of 100 mph, and 30
foot waves, struck China's southern Guangdong province,
injuring 11 people. It was the worst storm to hit that area
in years. Days earlier, the storm had 150 mph winds, with
gusts to 190 mph, and 40 foot waves...striking Luzon in
in the Philippines...with at least 11 fatalities.
In 2010 At least 200 structures were destroyed, and 1100 damaged,
after a dam on an eastern Iowa lake failed...as a result
of recent heavy rainfall of over 10 inches in 12 hours in
some areas.

In 1891 The mercury hit 109 degrees at Los Angeles CA marking the
peak of a torrid heat wave.
In 1956 The Andrea Doria sank in dense fog near Nantucket
Lightship MA. The ship was rammed by the Swedish-
American liner, Stockholm, forty-five miles off the coast
of Massachusetts. Fifty-two persons drowned, or were
killed by the impact.
In 1986 Tremendous hailstones pounded parts of South Dakota
damaging crops, buildings and vehicles. Hail piled two
feet deep at Black Hawk and northern Rapid City. Hail an
inch and a quarter in diameter fell for 85 minutes near
Miller and Huron, piling up to depths of two feet.
In 1987 Sixteen cities in the eastern U.S. reported record high
temperatures for the date. Beckley WV equalled their all-
time record high of 91 degrees, established just the
previous day. It marked their fourth day in a row of
90 degree heat, after hitting 90 degrees just twice in
the previous 25 years of records. The water temperature
of Lake Erie at Buffalo NY reached 79 degrees,
the warmest reading in 52 years of records.
In 1988 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from central Kansas
to western Kentucky and southern Illinois during the day.
Thunderstorms produced tennis ball size hail at Union MO,
and winds gusts to 65 mph at Sedalia MO. Five cities in
Washington and Oregon reported record high temperatures
for the date. Medford OR hit 107 degrees.
In 1989 Early afternoon thunderstorms over west central Missouri
drenched the town of Ferguson with four inches of rain.
Early evening thunderstorms in Pennsylvania produced more
than two inches of rain north of Avella in one hour.
In 2000 An F-4 tornado devastated much of Granite Falls, MN.
1 was killed, 14 were injured, with 350 structures
either damaged or destroyed along a 12 mile path.

In 1778 A Rhode Island hurricane prevented an impending British-
French sea battle, and caused extensive damage in
southeastern New England.
In 1933 The temperature at Greenland Ranch in Death Valley CA hit
127 degrees to establish a U.S. record for the month of
August.
In 1936 The temperature at Seymour TX hit 120 degrees to
establish a state record.
In 1955 During the second week of August hurricanes Connie and
Diane produced as much as 19 inches of rain in the
northeastern U.S. forcing rivers from Virginia to
Massachusetts into a high flood. Westfield MA was
deluged with 18.15 inches of rain in 24 hours, and at
Woonsocket RI the Blackstone River swelled from seventy
feet in width to a mile and a half. Connecticut and the
Delaware Valley were hardest hit. Total damage in New
England was 800 million dollars, and flooding claimed 187
lives.
In 1987 Early afternoon thunderstorms in Arizona produced 3.90
inches of rain in ninety minutes at Walnut National
Monument (located east of Flagstaff), along with three
inches of pea size hail, which had to be plowed off the
roads.
In 1988 Fifteen cities in the northeastern U.S. reported record
high temperatures for the date. Youngstown OH reported
twenty-six days of 90 degree weather for the year,
a total equal to that for the entire decade of the 1970s.
In 1989 Thunderstorms were scattered across nearly every state in
the Union by late in the day. Thunderstorms produced
wind gusts to 75 mph at Fergus Falls MN, and golf ball
size hail and wind gusts to 60 mph at Black Creek WI. In
the Chicago area, seven persons at a forest preserve in
North Riverside were injured by lightning.

In 1831 A blue sun was widely observed in the southern states.
The phenomena was believed to have pre-staged
Nat Turner's slave uprising.
In 1919 High winds and heavy rain struck the Middle Atlantic
Coast Region. In New Jersey, winds gusted to 60 mph
at Atlantic City, and nine inches of rain fell at
Tuckerton. The wind and rain leveled crops and stripped
trees of fruit causing several million dollars damage.
In 1980 The afternoon high at New York City was just 89 degrees.
But there were fifteen days of 90 degree heat during the
month, their hottest August of record.
In 1985 Hail larger than golf balls, driven by 70 mph winds,
moved down crops, stripped trees, and broke windows, near
Logan KS. Road graders cleared three foot drifts of hail
on Kansas Highway 9 east of Logan.
In 1987 Thunderstorms deluged the Central Gulf Coast States with
torrential rains. Thunderstorms in Mississippi drenched
Marion County with up to 15 inches of rain during the
morning hours, with 12.2 inches reported at Columbia.
Floodwaters swept cars away in the Lakeview subdivision
of Columbia when the the Lakeview Dam broke. Flash
flooding caused more than three million dollars damage in
Marion County.
In 1988 A dozen cities in the northeastern U.S. reported record
high temperatures for the date. Lansing MI reported a
record 35 days of 90 degree weather for the year, Detroit
MI reported a record 37 days of 90 degree heat for the
year, and Williamsport PA reported a record 38 days of
90 degree weather for the year.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing in a tropical airmass over the
northeastern U.S. soaked Connecticut and Massachusetts
with 4 to 8 inches of rain over the weekend, between the
11th and 13th of the month. Hartford CT received 7.70
inches of rain.
In 2004 (12th-15th) Florida became the target of a 1-2 tropical
weather punch...with Tropical Storm Bonnie hitting
Appalachicola with 50 mph winds at landfall...then,
with major Hurricane Charley as a Category 4, with 145
mph winds passing just to the west of Key West, and
coming ashore near Fort Myers at Charlotte Harbor on
the 13th. It was the first major hurricane to hit the
Florida west coast since Hurricane Donna in 1960.
Winds gusted to 127 mph at Punta Gorda, and to 105 mph
at Orlando. Western Cuba was hit with 105 mph winds
when Charley moved across. After crossing Florida, and
weakening to a minimal hurricane, Charley moved north,
hitting Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on the 14th. He
moved up the east coast as a Tropical Storm, struck
Long Island, NY, then finally dissipated off of the
England coast on the 15th. Preliminary damage costs
were at $15 billion, and over 2 million people across
Florida alone, were without power. Tragically, many
were left homeless, with many injuries and fatalities.
Major theme parks across Florida shut down ahead of
Charley...the first time that had been done since
Hurricane Floyd skirted eastern Florida in 1999.

In 1936 Temperatures across much of eastern Kansas soared above
110 degrees. Kansas City MO hit an all-time record high
of 113 degrees. It was one of sixteen consecutive days
of 100 degree heat for Kansas City. During that summer
there were a record 53 days of 100 degree heat, and
during the three summer months Kansas City received just
1.12 inches of rain.
In 1987 Slow moving thunderstorms deluged northern and western
suburbs of Chicago IL with torrential rains. O'Hare
Airport reported 9.35 inches in 18 hours, easily
exceeding the previous 24 hour record of 6.24 inches.
Flooding over a five day period resulted in 221 million
dollars damage. It was Chicago's worst flash flood
event, particularly for northern and western sections of
the city. Kennedy Expressway became a footpath for
thousands of travelers to O'Hare Airport as roads were
closed. The heavy rains swelled the Des Plaines River
above flood stage, and many persons had to be rescued
from stalled vehicles on flooded roads. (13th-14th)
In 1988 Eighteen cities in the northeastern U.S. reported record
high temperatures for the date, and the water temperature
at Lake Erie reached a record 80 degrees. Portland ME
reported a record fourteen straight days of 80 degree
weather. Milwaukee WI reported a record 34 days of 90
degree heat for the year. Afternoon and evening
thunderstorms resulted in about fifty reports of severe
weather in the northeastern U.S. One person was killed
at Stockbridge MI when a tornado knocked a tree onto
their camper.
In 1989 Afternoon thunderstorms in Illinois soaked the town of
Battendorf with 2.10 inches of rain in thirty minutes.
Evening thunderstorms in Montana produced wind gusts to
66 mph at Hobson.

In 1787 Tornadoes were reported in Connecticut, Rhode Island,
Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. Wethersfield CT was
hard hit by the tornado outbreak.
In 1946 Saint Louis MO was deluged with a record 8.78 inches of
rain in 24 hours.
In 1967 The "sundance fire" in northern Idaho was started by
lightning. Winds of 50 mph carried firebrands as much as
ten miles in advance to ignite new fires, and as a
result, the forest fire spread twenty miles across the
Selkirk Mountains in just twelve hours, burning 56,000
acres. The heat of the fire produced whirlwinds of flame
with winds up to 300 mph which flung giant trees about
like matchsticks.
In 1985 Near Whitehall, New York, lightning struck a farmhand.
En route to the hospital, his ambulance was also hit by
lightning.
In 1987 Thunderstorms developing ahead of a sharp cold front
produced severe weather in the Upper Midwest during the
afternoon and evening hours, with Minnesota and eastern
South Dakota hardest hit. A thunderstorm in west central
Minnesota spawned a tornado at Eagle Lake which killed
one person and injured eight others. A thunderstorm in
eastern South Dakota produced softball size hail at
Warner.
In 1988 Thirty five cities in twenty states in the north central
and northeastern U.S. reported record high temperatures
for the date, including Lamoni IA and Baltimore MD, where
the mercury hit 105 degrees. Temperatures 100 degrees or
above were reported in twenty-two states. Pierre SD was
the hot spot in the nation with a high of 114 degrees.
Bluefield WV reported eight straight days of record heat.
In 1989 Evening thunderstorms in eastern New Mexico produced wind
gusts to 66 mph at Clovis. Evening thunderstorms in West
Texas produced baseball size hail around Hereford,
Dimmitt, Ware and Dalhart.
In 2003 (9th-15th) Widespread flooding occurred across the eastern
United States from Florida to Maine. Numerous reports of
roads closed, roads and bridges washed out, mud and rock
slides, vehicles stranded, and basement flooding were
noted. Isolated evacuations occurred in North Carolina,
Georgia, Ohio, and New Hampshire. Many areas got from 2
to 3 inches of rain, while parts of West Virginia got
over 7 inches of rain.

In 1962 Hackberry LA was deluged with 22.00 inches of rain in 24
hours, establishing a state record.
In 1965 A national record for the month of August was established
when 2.5 inches of snow fell atop Mount Washington NH.
Temperatures in New England dipped to 39 degrees at
Nantucket MA, and to 25 degrees in Vermont. It was the
earliest freeze of record for many locations. The
temperature at Chicago IL dipped to 43 degrees.
In 1978 A tornado from Tropical Storm Debra wrecked parts of Memphis,
coming within a mile of Elvis Presley's Graceland.
In 1987 Some of the most powerful thunderstorms in several years
developed over the piedmont of North Carolina, and
marched across central sections of the state during the
late afternoon and evening hours. Baseball size hail was
reported around Albemarle, while thunderstorm winds
downed giant trees around High Falls.
In 1988 Cool air invaded the north central U.S. Ten cities
reported record low temperatures for the date, including
Bismarck ND with a reading of 33 degrees. Deerfield, a
small town in the Black Hills of South Dakota, reported
a morning low of 23 degrees. The remnants of Tropical
Storm Chris drenched eastern Pennsylvania with up to 5.50
inches of rain, and produced high winds which gusted to
90 mph, severely damaging a hundred boats in Anne Krundel
County MD.
In 1989 Evening thunderstorms produced destructive lightning in
West Virginia. The lightning caused widepsread damage,
particularily in Doddridge County. Numerous trees were
downed closing many roads. Fire companies had a
difficult time tending to the many homes and trailers on
fire. Anchorage AK reported a record 9.60 inches of rain
for the month of August. The average annual
precipitation for Anchorage is just slighty more than
fifteen inches. Three day rainfall totals in northwest
Missouri ranged up to 8.20 inches at Maryville.
In 2004 For the fourth time in a month, the Carolina coast was
was affected by a tropical weather system. After
Hurricane Alex on the 3rd and 4th, the remnants of
Tropical Storm Bonnie on the 12th, Hurricane Charley
on the 14th, Tropical Storm Gaston with 70 mph winds,
came ashore on the 29th near Charleston. After bringing
heavy rain, flooding, and tornadoes to the region, the
storm was picked up by an approaching cold front, which
turned Gaston north, then northeast off the U.S. Coast
on the 30th (29th-30th)...but not before bringing severe
flooding to the Richmond, Virginia area. That same day,
Tropical Storm Hermine formed in the Atlantic, a record
8th named storm for the month of August. Hermine made
landfall near New Bedford, Massachusetts on the 31st,
before becoming extratropical.
In 2005 (23th-29th) A tropical depression formed on August 23rd,
becoming Tropical Storm Katrina on August 24th as it moved
into the central Bahamas. The storm continued to track west
while gradually intensifying and made its initial landfall
along the southeast Florida coast on August 25th as a
Category 1 hurricane (80mph) on the Saffir-Simpson
Hurricane Scale. After moving west across south Florida and
into the very warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Katrina
intensified rapidly and attained Category 5 status (with
peak sustained winds of 175mph) for a period of time as it
moved northwest on August 28th. Katrina weakened to a
Category 3 before making landfall along the northern Gulf
Coast, first in southeast Louisiana (sustained winds: 125
mph) and then made landfall once more along the Mississippi
Gulf Coast (sustained winds: 120mph). Katrina finally
weakened below hurricane intensity late on August 29th over
east central Mississippi. Katrina caused enormous loss of
life and destruction of property...and was the costliest
hurricane to ever hit the United States, surpassing the
record previously held by Hurricane Andrew from 1992. In
addition, Katrina is one of the 5 deadliest hurricanes to
ever strike the United States. In all, Katrina was
responsible for 1,833 fatalities and approximately $108
billion in damage (un-adjusted 2005 dollars).
In 2021 Hurricane Ida made landfall at 10:55am, near Port Fourchon,
Louisiana, with 150 mph winds, and gusts to 172 mph. All of
New Orleans lost power. Storm surge water level rises were
well in excess of 5 feet in many areas. Numerous tornadoes
were spawned, along with several flash flood emergencies
and there was also a levee failure near New Orleans. Ida;
made landfall 16 years to the day after Hurricane Katrina.

In 1915 The temperature at Bartlesville OK dipped to 38 degrees
to establish a state record for the month of August.
In 1954 Hurricane Carol swept across eastern New England killing
60 persons and causing 450 million dollars damage. It
was the first of three hurricanes to affect New England
that year.
In 1971 The low of 84 degrees and high of 108 degrees at Death
Valley CA were the coolest of the month. The average
daily high was 115.7 degrees that August, and the average
daily low was 93.4 degrees.
In 1984 Lightning ignited several forest fires in Montana, one of
which burned through 100,000 acres of timber and
grassland.
In 1987 Eight cities in Washington and Oregon reported record
high temperatures for the date, including Eugene OR and
Portland OR with afternoon highs of 102 degrees. The
high of 102 at Portland smashed their previous record for
the date by twelve degrees. Frost was reported in South
Dakota. Aberdeen SD established a record for the month
of August with a low of 32 degrees. Britton SD dipped to
31 degrees.
In 1988 August ended on a relatively mild and tranquil note for
most of the nation. Forest fires in the northwestern
U.S. scorched 180,000 acres of land during the last week
of August.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing along a stationary front spread
severe weather from Minnesota to Indiana through the
course of the day and night. Thunderstorms in Minnesota
produced baseball size hail near Saint Michael and
Hutchinson, and drenched Moose Lake with nine inches of
rain in six hours. Tucson AZ hit 100 degrees for a
