    forecast period. One exception may be portions of the Gulf Coast
    early next week. By around Day 6 (Tuesday), medium-range guidance
    depicts a pronounced mid-level trough amplifying over the Middle MS
    Valley, supporting surface low development along the southeast Gulf
    Coast. Seasonal low-level moisture may advect a few hundred miles
    inland from the coast, ahead of the surface low. If this occurs,
    isolated severe thunderstorms may develop along the warm front.
    However, timing and placement of the surface low differs too much
    among medium range guidance for the introduction of severe
    probabilities this far in advance.

    A progressive upper-air pattern will prevail over the CONUS through
    next week, supporting multiple rounds of surface high pressure
    overspreading the Interior West, Great Plains, OH Valley, and much
    of the Northeast. Static stability will limit thunderstorm
    development over most locales. However, a couple instances of
    surface low development are possible along the Gulf Coast this
    upcoming week, which may support thunderstorm development as
    seasonably rich low-level moisture returns inland, beneath
    deep-layer ascent.

    A surface low may first traverse the Gulf Coast on Day 5/Tuesday,
    with a few strong thunderstorms possible along the warm front
    (assuming adequate buoyancy can materialize). A similar pattern of
    surface low development and progression along the Gulf Coast may
    also occur on Day 8/Friday, with thunderstorms also possible.
    Nonetheless, questions about the timing and track of the surface
    lows, and the degree of instability preceding them, warrant the
    withholding of severe probabilities for this outlook.

    week into next weekend. A surface low will rapidly track from the
    southeast Gulf Coast, northeastward along the Eastern Seaboard Day
    4/Tuesday, supporting thunderstorm development along the Southeast
    Coast and the FL Peninsula. Thereafter, surface high pressure and
    associated static stability should limit thunderstorm development
    over most locales until late in the week into the weekend. By this
    point, moisture return across the western Gulf Coast region may
    foster enough buoyancy to support thunderstorm potential. It is
    plausible that strong to perhaps isolated severe thunderstorms may
    develop over the TX Coastal Plain in the Days 6-7 (Thursday-Friday)
    time frame if the moisture can become rich/deep enough to support
    greater buoyancy. However, the lack in medium-range guidance
    agreement lends too little confidence in this scenario for the
    introduction of severe probabilities this far in advance.

    central Plains into the TN Valley may encourage surface low

    of a more robustly buoyant airmass advecting inland through this

    Medium-range guidance indicates that at least modestly amplified
    mid/upper ridging will continue to build and be maintained across
    the Pacific coast into the Rockies through next week. Within the
    northwesterly flow downstream of this feature, several digging short
    wave perturbations appear likely to reinforce large-scale troughing
    across the eastern U.S., while also contributing to occasional
    surface cyclogenesis from the lee of the northern Rockies through
    the northern and middle Atlantic Seaboard. However, these are not
    likely to be accompanied by a strengthening southerly return flow
    emanating from the Gulf Basin. Regardless, in the wake of a
    reinforcing cold intrusion across much of the Florida Peninsula, and
    through much of the Gulf Basin, early next week, it appears that
    boundary-layer modification over the Gulf will not become conducive
    to appreciable inland low-level moisture return.

    mid to late this week. A broad trough in the West will bring
    southwesterly flow across the Rockies and parts of the Plains. In
    the East, an upper ridge will persist. During the weekend, models
    are in general agreement that the upper ridge will flatten and
    broaden across the southern U.S. This pattern will favor the
    maintenance of a very moist airmass within parts of the Plains into
    the Midwest and Southeast. The lack of more notable mid-level and
    surface features decrease predictability with regard to where severe
    convection may occur. That being said, subtle surface
    boundaries/shortwave troughs may promote convective development each
    day within parts of the Plains/Midwest. Trends in model guidance

    A strong mid-level jet streak is expected to round the base of the
    western CONUS trough on Sunday and emerge across the northern
    Plains. As this occurs, the lee cyclone across eastern Colorado will
    deepen further and move northward into the northern Plains by 12Z
    Monday. Continued northward moisture transport will result in strong
    to very strong instability ahead of the surface low across the
    northern Plains. Forecast soundings show a very favorable
    environment and an uncapped airmass by evening. Forecast specifics
    remain nebulous as individual shortwave troughs will impact the
    timing and coverage of storms, but severe storms are possible at
    some point Sunday afternoon to Sunday night across eastern North
    Dakota and into northwest Minnesota.

    ...D5/Mon - Upper Midwest...
    The primary shortwave trough and associated mid-level jet streak is
    forecast to shift northeastward across the northern Plains and
    toward the Upper Midwest on Monday. This will occur atop a very
    unstable airmass across a broad area of the Upper Midwest. Severe
    storms are possible, but the exact magnitude and extent of the
    threat will become more clear once individual shortwave troughs
    associated with this upper trough become better sampled.

    Beyond Day 5, the upper-level pattern becomes a bit more uncertain.
    Overall, a general pattern with a trough persisting over the
    Northwest or northern Rockies and a ridge over the Plains or Midwest
    seems most likely. However, the differences in amplitude and
    location of these features limit predictability. Within this broader
    pattern, severe weather will be most likely from the northern
    Rockies to the northern Plains and also potentially on the eastern
    periphery of the upper ridge across the Northeast. At this time,
    predictability is too low to add any probability areas.

    An upper-level trough centered within the Intermountain West will
    continue pivoting northeast through the northern Plains on Monday.
    This feature will be fairly meridional in character. The strongest
    height falls are likely to occur after 00Z within North Dakota. To
    the east, an amplified upper ridge will be in place. Moisture
    advection will continue in the upper Mississippi Valley given the
    southerly low levels winds. Strong to extreme buoyancy is expected
    to develop as a result. While this pattern does suggest potential
    for severe weather, there is still uncertainty as to where the most
    favorable environment will be given the influence of convection that
    could occur late on Sunday night into early Monday morning. The 15%
    area has been maintained this cycle given the potential for a an MCS
    to develop, but modification seems likely in the coming days given
    the mesoscale details that will play a large role in where severe
    weather ultimately occurs.

    From Tuesday onward, the strongest mid-level flow will shift into
    Canada as the western upper trough becomes more broad. A large
    reservoir of strong to extreme buoyancy is still forecast to be in
    place underneath the ridge. While areas of severe weather are
    possible, they will be highly tied to mesoscale features as larger
    scale features will become more nebulous and deep-layer shear will
    weaken through the remainder of the period. As a result,
    predictability is reduced.

    entrenched while broad cyclonic flow will persist in the West before potentially breaking down by the weekend. This will drive a belt of

    central/northern Plains. Repeated lee trough development along with
    the surface high in the East will maintain rich moisture across
    parts of the Plains and especially the Midwest/Southeast. With
    large-scale features generally being weak, convective development
    will largely be reliant on terrain features, subtle shortwave
    troughs, or surface boundaries. With this pattern, at least low
    severe potential will exist within the northern Plains into the

    The large-scale pattern will feature an upper high over the southern
    High Plains with ridging extending into the northern Plains and
    upper MS Valley. Meanwhile, broader-scale troughing will persist
    across the eastern CONUS, anchored by an upper low over the
    Mid-Atlantic.

    A very moist air mass is expected to contribute to moderate to
    strong instability by afternoon along a cold front over the
    Southeast. While vertical shear will remain rather weak, the strong
    buoyancy will be supportive of locally intense downdrafts capable of
    damaging winds. Elsewhere, a few strong to severe storms appear
    possible within a moist upslope regime over the central High Plains,
    as well as along a cold front moving into the northern High Plains.


    ...Days 5 and 6/Thursday and Friday...

    The southwestern U.S. ridge/eastern U.S. trough configuration will
    be maintained this period. Between those features, a notable
    short-wave trough is forecast to track from the northern Plains into
    the mid MS Valley along with a surface frontal system. Persistent
    low-level ridging from the Great Lakes into the Gulf Coast states
    will limit the breadth of an unstable warm sector to the northern
    and central Plains on Thursday, where thunderstorms are expected.
    Vertical shear is not forecast to be particularly strong; however,
    some potential exists for an organized severe weather episode.
    Additional strong to severe storms appear possible along the front
    in the Ozarks on Friday. Both days will continue to be monitored for
    the possible inclusion of severe weather probabilities in subsequent
    forecasts.


    ...Days 7 and 8/Saturday and Sunday...

    There is good agreement across the ensemble means in the progression
    of a more significant short-wave trough from western into central
    Canada with the southern fringe of more substantial height falls
    overspreading the northern Rockies into the northern High Plains on
    Sunday. That upper-air system will be attended by a cold front that
    could be the source of severe storm development in those areas
    Sunday afternoon into night.

    From Wednesday to Friday, a broad mid-level cyclonic flow pattern is
    forecast to remain in place across the Great Lakes and the
    Northeast, as a ridge moves eastward from the northern Rockies into
    the upper Mississippi Valley. At the surface, a cold front is
    forecast to become quasi-stationary from the central and northern
    Plains into the mid Missouri and Ohio Valleys. Low-level convergence
    near this front will be a focus for convective development each day.


    On Wednesday, model forecasts suggest that scattered thunderstorms
    will most likely develop Wednesday afternoon along an axis of
    moderate instability from western Nebraska into southwestern South
    Dakota. The storms will be supported by a mid-level shortwave trough
    moving across the north-central U.S. Moderate deep-layer shear near
    the instability axis should support a severe threat during the
    afternoon and evening. The models also suggest that a convective
    cluster will form within a very moist and unstable airmass in the
    central Appalachians Wednesday afternoon, where a wind-damage threat
    will be possible.

    On Thursday, the most favored corridor for convective development is
    forecast from eastern Nebraska into central Illinois. However, the
    models suggest that scattered convective coverage could be
    concentrated overnight as low-level flow increases across the
    region. A severe threat could develop during the day but would
    remain relatively isolated due to a lack of storm coverage. An
    isolated severe threat could also develop across parts of the
    central and northern High Plains during the afternoon. However,
    storms there will also likely be isolated due to a shortwave ridge
    aloft.

    On Friday, thunderstorm swill also be possible from the central

    determined by outflow boundaries associated with the previous day's

    Over the weekend, a mid-level shortwave ridge is forecast to move
    across the north-central U.S., as west-northwesterly flow remains in
    the Northeast. An axis of instability is forecast from the central

    along and near the instability axis each afternoon and evening.

    signal is not that strong and thus, it is unclear if more than an
    isolated threat will exist; but the evolution of this front and the
    instability associated with it will be monitored.

    ...D7/Saturday to D8/Sunday...
    There is still a fair amount of uncertainty with the evolution of
    the pattern by next weekend, but a general trend toward flattening
    of the upper-level ridge is apparent in the deterministic, AI, and
    ensemble guidance next weekend. This includes moderate flow within
    the zonal region across the central/northern Plains and into the
    Upper Midwest. This period will need to be watched closely as strong instability and moderate shear appear to overlap across a relatively
    broad region, which should support diurnal thunderstorm activity
    given the flattening of the ridge. The specific timing/location of
    these threats will depend on evolution of the pattern and the
    embedded shortwave troughs within the flow. However, it is worth
    noting that the EC-AIFS and the AIGFS both have a signal for a more consolidated mid-level shortwave trough moving across the northern
    Plains on Sunday/D8, which has also been consistently shown by the
    EC-AIFS for the past 4 runs. If this trend continues, there may be opportunities for probabilities to be added in later outlooks.

    westward toward the Plains by next weekend. Multiple mid-level
    impulses and shortwave troughs will traverse the upper ridge this
    week before upper troughing dominates the Interior West toward the
    end of the extended forecast period. The best chances for severe
    thunderstorms will be with the aforementioned impulses traversing
    the ridge over the Great Lakes to the East Coast, particularly
    during the middle of the week.

    ...Days 4-6 (Wednesday-Friday) - Northeast to Mid-Atlantic...
    Severe probabilities have been maintained for portions of the lower
    Hudson Valley into the Mid-Atlantic Day 4/Wednesday, as guidance
    consensus continues to show a well-timed shortwave trough
    overspreading this region. Medium-range guidance continues to show a
    convective precipitation signal accompanying this impulse along with appreciable buoyancy and vertical wind shear. It should be noted
    that convective overturning from Day 3 (Tuesday) storms may
    stabilize part of this area, with the specific location of storms
    becoming dependent on residual baroclinic boundaries. As such, the
    exact placement of Wednesday's severe probabilities may need to be
    adjusted accordingly.

    Likewise, for Day 5/Thursday, another mid-level impulse will
    traverse the northeast extent of the upper ridge and overspread the Mid-Atlantic. Given adequate buoyancy and shear likely remaining in
    place, 15 percent severe probabilities have been introduced. As with
    the previous day, these probabilities may need some adjustment in
    future outlooks based on where airmass modification along baroclinic
    zones occurs.

    Medium-range guidance continues to show a pronounced mid-level
    impulse, accompanied by adequate deep-layer shear and buoyancy,
    impinging on the Mid-Atlantic on Day 6/Friday, which would support
    at least an isolated severe threat. ML/AI guidance also suggests
    that the Friday severe threat would encompass the ending stages of a
    potential multi-day severe episode. Given the multiple preceding
    days of storms and constant shift in favorable corridors modulated
    by baroclinic zones, confidence is very low for realistically
    pinpointing a focused severe area. However, it appears the Delmarva
    may be the most likely area for seeing organized storm activity.

    margins of that which supports organized storm modes and an

    guidance differs on the evolution of the pattern with considerable
    uncertainty.

    ...D7/Sunday to D8/Monday - Northern Plains...
    Guidance continues to consolidate around an unseasonably strong
    mid-level shortwave trough across the northern Plains into the Upper
    Midwest on Sunday and Monday. There is still some spread around the
    timing of this trough and also the degree of destabilization ahead
    of it. However, despite these timing differences, a moderately
    strong signal for an increasing severe weather threat in this period
    appears to be emerging as a trough with a consistent convective
    signal is shown by the ECMWF and GFS and also by the AI-GFS and
    AI-ECMWF. Ensemble guidance shows a flattened ridge with a mid-level
    jet streak across this region during the same timeframe.
    Surprisingly, AI/ML guidance shows very little signal for a severe
    threat across this region. Analysis of individual ensemble members
    suggests this is likely reflective of the uncertainty in timing and
    location of this trough and greater spread among the ensemble
    guidance. Nonetheless, the potential for an organized severe weather
    threat across the northern Plains and/or Upper Midwest late this
    weekend into early next week appears to be increasing. If guidance
    continues to consolidate with decreasing spread about the timing of
    the trough, severe weather probabilities may eventually be needed.

    and attending belt of mid-level flow progressing along the

    states. At the surface, an area of low pressure will follow the same
    track as the upper-air system, while a trailing cold front advances
    through the lower MS and TN Valleys. While weaker than on Friday, a
    modest enhancement of 850-mb winds is forecast during the afternoon
    ahead of the surface low over the OH and TN Valleys.

    Morning storms appear possible from the lower OH into lower MS
    Valleys within a zone of warm advection associated with a nocturnal
    low-level jet. The longevity and extent of early-day storms remain
    uncertain, but where stronger heating can occur, the presence of
    boundary-layer dewpoints in the 70s will contribute to pockets of
    moderate instability. Additional storms are anticipated during the
    afternoon, focused along the cold front and any residual outflow
    boundaries from previous storms. Deep-layer shear is expected to
    remain generally less than 30 kt, which will tend to limit the
    potential for organized storm modes. A possible exception is across
    parts of KY and TN where slightly stronger low-level shear could
    contribute to updraft rotation and some tornado risk. Otherwise,
    locally damaging wind gusts appear to be the primary hazard.

    Isolated severe storms capable of mainly damaging winds and hail
    appear possible over the southern High Plains Saturday afternoon and
    evening within a moist and unstable upslope regime.

    The models remain in relatively good agreement in depicting a strong
    short-wave trough and attending belt of mid-level flow progressing
    along the international border from the northern Rockies into the
    northern Plains. Low-level ridging from the Great Lakes into
    southern Plains may disrupt the return of robust boundary-layer
    moisture ahead of a cold front moving through the northern Plains
    into the upper MS Valley. Nonetheless, the presence of steep lapse

    U.S. with a belt of enhanced, cyclonic flow from the northern

    Lakes. At the surface, a front will advance through the upper Great
    Lakes with the western extension of the boundary settling more
    slowly south through the central into southern High Plains.
    Thunderstorms may be ongoing at 12Z across portions of the mid MO
    Valley with lingering clouds and convective outflow potentially
    modulating the location of the effective surface front and the
    degree of instability ahead of it. The models suggest an area from
    eastern KS into MO as being the most probable location for at least
    isolated severe storms during the afternoon and evening hours. The
    extent of the threat will likely be dependent on mesoscale details
    yet to be known. As such, no area will be delineated in this
    forecast.

    Other areas of isolated severe storm potential will be in the
    central High Plains and southeast AZ.


    ...Days 5 and 6/ Thursday and Friday...

    A slight eastward shift of the mean trough position is forecast on
    Thursday with some model signal for an embedded short-wave trough to
    move through the Great Lakes. At the surface, there is some
    suggestion that a weak front or wind shift will move into the
    northern Mid-Atlantic during the afternoon with the trailing
    extension of that boundary stretching through the mid MS Valley into
    the southern High Plains. Ahead of that boundary, widespread 70+ F
    dewpoints are expected from New England into the Mid-Atlantic and
    Carolinas, leading to moderate to potentially strong instability.
    The greatest potential for a few severe storms appears to be across
    the Mid-Atlantic Thursday afternoon where the moderate instability
    will coincide with a belt of 30-40 kt mid-level flow.

    Some severe weather threat may also develop in the Ozark Plateau and
    AZ Thursday afternoon and evening.

    On Friday, the above-mentioned Great Lakes short-wave trough is
    expected to shear northeast across southern ON with 30-40 kt of
    mid-level flow prevailing over the Northeast. The surface pattern is
    somewhat disorganized with some semblance of a trough from southern
    New England through the Mid-Atlantic coastal region. Moderate to
    strong instability may again develop ahead of that feature,
    supporting the potential for some severe weather threat during the
    afternoon and early evening hours. However, the strongest vertical
    shear is forecast to remain to the north of the stronger
    instability, leading to uncertainty in the magnitude of the severe
    threat.


    ...Days 7 and 8/Saturday and Sunday...

    The various 00Z ensemble mean solutions indicate a slight eastward
    shift of an upper low near Hudson Bay with low-amplitude troughing
    and strengthening mid-level flow moving into the Northeast.
    Southerly low-level winds within the western periphery of a surface
    high positioned off the Atlantic Coast will maintain a moist and
    unstable air mass beneath the strengthening winds aloft. As such,
    some severe weather threat is expected to persist from the
    Mid-Atlantic into New England this period.

    into the Midwest, where some severe weather potential may exist.

    approach of the disturbance aloft, thunderstorms are expected to
    increase in coverage through the afternoon with some severe weather
    possible. Generally weak vertical shear and the absence of a
    coherent front in the region lead to uncertainty in where the
    greatest threat may materialize.

    An isolated severe threat may also develop along the front from the
    Ozark Plateau into the southern High Plains, and in AZ during the
    afternoon and evening.

    An intense mid/upper-level low is expected to evolve over central
    Canada with upper highs situated over the Great Basin and off the
    Mid-Atlantic Coast. Between those features, corridors of stronger
    mid-level flow are forecast from the northern Rockies into the
    northern Plains, and to a lesser extent over the Northeast.
    Some severe weather threat may again materialize from the
    Mid-Atlantic into southern New England in the vicinity of a surface

    uncertainty in the extent of the severe weather threat. Isolated
    severe storms also appear possible along a front moving into the

    Hudson Bay shifting east into northern QC with persistent ridging
    over the southern CONUS. Between those features, a belt of enhanced
    mid-level flow is forecast across the northern tier of states with
    some signal for continued troughing through Sunday over the Great
    Lakes into the OH Valley. At the surface, there is ensemble member
    clustering in surface low positions over the northern Plains along a
    front extending into the upper Great Lakes. There is a model signal
    for the front to continue into the Great Lakes and Midwest, where
    some severe weather threat appears possible. A separate severe
    weather risk may also persist from the Mid-Atlantic into New

    The subtle nature of the forcing for ascent leads to uncertainty in
    severe storm coverage, so no area will be included.

    The 00Z ensemble means are in reasonably good agreement in depicting
    the continuation of an upper high over the southwestern U.S. with lower-amplitude troughing over the Great Lakes into the Northeast.
    At the surface, there is considerable model spread in the location
    of relevant boundaries that might focus severe storms. That being
    said, much of the available AI guidance suggests an increasing
    severe weather threat in the Mid-Atlantic during this time frame.

    Model trends will continue to be monitored for the possible
    inclusion of an area in subsequent outlooks.

    move into the northern High Plains on Sunday and the upper MS Valley
    into northern Plains on Monday. Low-level ridging from the Great
    Lakes into Ozark Plateau may disrupt the advection of a maritime
    tropical air mass ahead of the front. However, evapotranspiration
    will contribute to pockets of higher moisture content, which,
    combined with the eastern extension of an EML plume, will contribute
    to moderate instability ahead of a surface cold front both
    afternoons.

    On Sunday, the strongest forcing for ascent associated with a lead
    vorticity lobe is expected to remain across SK and MB with capping
    to the south of that feature potentially limiting storm coverage

    low-amplitude troughing across the north-central states on Tuesday
    with a belt of enhanced mid-level flow extending from the northern

    possible over the central High Plains where the southern periphery
    of the stronger mid-level flow is juxtaposed with a moist and
    unstable upslope regime.

    By Wednesday and Thursday, the ensemble mean solutions indicate a
    modestly enhanced belt of quasi-zonal flow across the northern tier
    of the CONUS. However, there is considerable spread across the
    deterministic models with the location and track of disturbances

    focus for this threat remains nebulous. Therefore, the location of
    any surface features remains unclear and thus, it is difficult to

    Severe weather may be possible across portions of the Upper Midwest
    on Saturday, but this threat will be somewhat dependent on the
    location and intensity of Day 4 convection.

    The ECMWF and AI-ECMWF remain relatively consistent showing a trough
    traversing the northwest on Saturday and emerging across the
    northern Plains on Sunday. Meanwhile, the GFS and AI-GFS have
    trended more progressive, and the individual GEFS members show
    substantial spread in the upper-level pattern for Sunday/Day6. The
    relative consistency in timing and location of the upper-level
    trough from the ECMWF build confidence for this solution. However,
    even the ECMWF and AI-ECMWF trended slightly less amplified with
    this trough. Therefore, the combination of large spread in the upper
    pattern from GEFS members and a slightly deamplified trend from the
    ECMWF provide enough uncertainty to avoid adding probabilities at

    Otherwise, normal gusty outflow winds are to be expected.

    To the west, an area of stronger instability is forecast across the
    Mid MO Valley, where northwesterly midlevel winds of 35 kt will
    exist along the southern periphery of a trough sweeping across the
    Upper Great Lakes. Evening/overnight storms may occur across parts
    of eastern NE, IA, and MO, and instability may be large enough to
    warrant at least low severe probabilities as the event nears in
    time.

    ...Sunday/D5...
    Drying will occur aloft over parts of the Northeast as a wave moves
    into Quebec, but substantial low-level moisture will still support
    scattered thunderstorms ahead of a cold front across the Mid
    Atlantic. Shear will again be weak, but perhaps enough mean wind
    speeds will exist for storms to be mobile/produce areas of strong
    gusts.

    To the west, low-level moisture is forecast to shift a bit farther
    north into the Dakotas, and this will occur beneath stronger
    northwest flow aloft. This area bears watching in later outlooks, as
    wind profiles may somewhat favor supercells. Predictability is
    currently low.

    ...Mon/D6 to Wed/D8...
    While predictability decreases further during this time frame,
    moderate west to northwest flow aloft will remain from the upper MS
    Valley across the Great Lakes, which will spread into the Northeast
    D7/D8. If a wave does amplify within this flow regime, a corridor of
    damaging winds could develop given upper 60s to low 70s F dewpoints
    along/south of the mean frontal zone (roughly IA to NY/PA by end of
    the period). Model variation is currently too great to depict an
    precise corridor.

    A mid-level ridge will move slowly east across the Plains with
    slight suppression through the day. A lee trough will consolidate
    into a surface low across the northern Plains through the day
    Saturday. Ahead of this surface low, strong instability is forecast
    across South Dakota and vicinity. Despite the favorable environment
    across this region, primary forcing will be focused on the nose of
    the low-level jet across Iowa and into Wisconsin, well east of the
    greatest instability and near the Canadian border. Therefore,
    limited storm coverage precludes severe weather probabilities at
    this time, but given the favorable environment, it will need to be
    monitored closely.

    ...D5/Sunday - North Dakota and Vicinity...
    A mid-level shortwave trough will move from the Pacific Northwest to
    the northern Plains Saturday/D4 and Sunday/D5. 00Z guidance has come
    into fairly consistent agreement with the location and amplitude of
    this trough across eastern Montana at 00Z Sunday evening. However,
    there is considerable disagreement with the degree of
    destabilization across North Dakota, where forcing will be greatest.
    The GFS dry bias across most of the Plains has severely lessened the instability. However, despite this challenge, it is apparent that
    most of the instability significantly southeast of the upper-level
    forcing. The GFS-Para seems to have a more realistic handle on
    low-level moisture/instability magnitude but it also shows a
    significant disconnect between where this instability is located and
    the deeper forcing.

    The deterministic ECMWF forecast shows a potentially significant
    severe weather event across North Dakota with strong instability and
    shear ahead of a robust convective QPF signal. This is supported by
    the AI-ECMWF which shows a similar evolution. However, the
    EC-ensemble mean of instability shows at least some trend toward the
    GEFS with primary instability southeast of the best forcing.

    It is also worth noting that the wave is forecast to eject across
    North Dakota relatively late (~06Z) which may be a somewhat limiting
    factor to a greater threat. This potential timing disconnect,
    combined with some hint of limited overlap between the greatest
    instability and the primary upper forcing, cast enough uncertainty
    to preclude severe weather probabilities at this time. However, it
    is worth noting that if a solution similar to the ECMWF
    materializes, a significant severe weather event is possible.

    ...D6 and Beyond...
    By early next week, the primary mid-level ridge appears to center
    around the southern Appalachians with broad southwesterly flow from
    the Southwest to the Great Lakes. Within this area of southwesterly
    flow, multiple embedded mid-level shortwave troughs are forecast. Predictability of these smaller scale features is relatively low at
    this range, but some continued severe weather threat will likely
    persist around the periphery of the ridge from the Plains to the
    Great Lakes and potentially into the Northeast.

    isolated to scattered thunderstorm development will be possible

    medium-range guidance that at least one impulse will traverse the
    eastern Great Lakes to the Mid-Atlantic/southern New England

    will reside across much of these areas, supporting strong
    destabilization each day. On Sunday, a corridor of severe
    thunderstorm potential appears possible across parts of MN/WI toward
    northern IA/IL as a weak shortwave impulse initially over the
    Dakotas spreads east. While details regarding storm coverage remain
    uncertain, sufficient deep layer shear and strong instability will
    be in place, and at least isolated storm clusters could pose a risk
    for damaging winds.

    By Monday, an upper shortwave trough will emanating from an upper
    low near Hudson Bay will dig southward across the Great Lakes. This
    will result in increasing northwesterly flow aloft. Meanwhile, a
    surface low may move eastward across the Great Lakes near the
    international border while a stronger nocturnal low-level jet
    develops over parts of the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. This
    stronger flow will overspread a moist and unstable airmass, and
    potential for thunderstorm clusters developing into an MCS appears
    possible.

    While details remain uncertain regarding convective evolution and
    coverage on Sunday and Monday, through broader synoptic pattern
    appears favorable for at least isolated severe thunderstorms. The 15
    percent severe areas may shift some in the coming days as details
    become more clear.

    It is possible some severe potential could shift east/southeast on
    Tuesday toward the central Appalachians and the Mid-Atlantic.

    Confidence in where greater risk corridors may develop is low, and
    will largely be influenced by convective evolution in the Days 4-5/Sunday-Monday periods.

    A strong upper ridge will shift west across the western U.S. late in
    the period, bringing a broad area of generally weak deep-layer
    northwesterly flow to the eastern half of the CONUS. Some
    thunderstorm potential is likely within this typical summertime

    A prominent upper high will remain centered over the central and
    southern Plains with a belt of enhanced mid-level flow forecast
    along the periphery of that feature from the northern Plains into
    the Great Lakes. Within that flow regime, a short-wave trough is
    forecast to translate through the Great Lakes in tandem with a
    surface low and trailing cold front. A hot and moist boundary layer
    is expected ahead of the front, yielding moderate to strong
    instability by afternoon. Despite veered low-level winds,
    strengthening mid/upper-level winds in the exit region of a jet
    streak will contribute to sufficient vertical shear for organized
    severe storms across portions of the Great Lakes into the OH Valley
    Monday afternoon into night.


    ...Day 5/Tuesday...
    The Day 4/Monday short-wave trough is forecast to evolve into an
    upper low across southwest ON and the lower Great Lakes with an
    associated belt of stronger cyclonic flow developing from the OH
    Valley into the southern Mid-Atlantic and NC. At the surface, an
    area of low pressure will develop from the lower Great Lakes into
    central NY with a trailing cold front advancing through the upper OH
    Valley, central Appalachians, and Mid-Atlantic.

    Thunderstorms may be ongoing Tuesday morning along and ahead of the
    front from the lower Great Lakes and upper OH Valley into the
    Mid-Atlantic. Stronger heating is anticipated to the south of the
    early-day storms from the southern Mid-Atlantic into NC, where
    moderate to potentially strong instability is forecast. The
    strongest instability will coincide with modestly strong deep-layer
    shear to support some severe weather threat in those areas Tuesday
    afternoon and evening.


    ...Days 6-8/Wednesday-Friday...
    The 00Z ensemble means depict a slight westward regression of the
    dominant mid/upper-level high with persistent troughing along the
    East Coast. On the periphery of the high, a notable short-wave
    trough is forecast to progress from the Canadian Rockies on
    Wednesday through the Prairie Provinces on Thursday with modest
    height falls along the international border. By Friday, there is
    some model signal for another short-wave trough to move into the
    upper MS Valley and Great Lakes regions. At the surface, a more
    substantial cold front is projected to move into the northern Plains
    on Thursday, and the upper Midwest and Great Lakes by Friday.

    A few severe storms appear possible in the Southeast and northern
    Plains on Wednesday, the northern Plains on Thursday, and the upper
    Midwest into the Great Lakes on Friday. Confidence in the magnitude
    and areal extent of the threat is currently too low to delineate

    An upper low is forecast to develop from southwest ON into the
    northern Mid-Atlantic with an attending belt of 35-45 kt mid-level
    flow extending from the OH Valley into the southern Mid-Atlantic.
    At the surface, a cyclone will remain vertically aligned with the
    upper low, while a trailing cold front advances through the upper OH
    and TN Valleys into the Mid-Atlantic, Carolinas, and Gulf Coast
    states. A lee trough is expected to develop ahead of the cold front
    along the Piedmont Tuesday afternoon.

    Showers and thunderstorms (some potentially strong) are expected to
    be ongoing Tuesday morning from the upper OH Valley into the
    Mid-Atlantic, aided by forcing for ascent ahead of the upper low and
    low-level warm air and moisture advection along a 30-40 kt low-level
    jet. That activity is expected to linger into the afternoon from NY
    and PA into western New England, which will limit the potential for
    air mass destabilization in those areas. Stronger daytime heating
    appears possible south of the Mason-Dixon Line, where moderate
    instability is forecast across the pre-frontal warm sector.

    Thunderstorms are expected to increase in coverage and intensity
    during the afternoon along the cold front and lee trough from the
    Delmarva into central Appalachians and VA/NC Piedmont. The moderate
    instability combined with 35-40 kt of deep-layer shear will support
    organized storm modes with the primary hazard being damaging wind
    gusts.

    Other more isolated severe storms appear possible over the central
    High Plains within a low-level upslope regime.


    ...Day 5/Wednesday...
    The Day 4/Tuesday upper low is forecast to slowly drift northeast
    with a belt of stronger mid-level winds overspreading New England. A
    surface low will remain vertically aligned with the mid-level system
    with convergence in the vicinity of that feature and a trailing
    front serving as the focus for afternoon thunderstorm development.
    The models suggest that southern to central parts of New England may
    become moderately unstable, which, combined with the slight shear
    enhancement, may support a few strong to severe storms.

    Additional strong to severe storms appear possible along a frontal
    zone in the Southeast, where a very moist air mass will contribute
    to moderate to strong instability.

    Uncertainty in the extent of the severe weather threat in both areas
    precludes the delineation of a 15% probability contour.


    ...Days 6-8/Thursday through Saturday...

    The 00Z ensemble means are in reasonably good agreement in depicting
    the retrogression of the upper high from the Southern Rockies into
    the lower CO Valley. A concurrent weakening and broadening of the
    eastern CONUS trough is also forecast. There is a model signal for a
    stronger mid-level system to move into BC and the Pacific Northwest
    by Day 8/Saturday. Deterministic guidance indicates a series of weak disturbances tracking from the northern Plains to along and east of
    the MS Valley during this time period with sporadic occurrences of
    severe weather possible. However, the large-scale pattern currently
    appears unsupportive of an organized severe weather episode.

    A broad cyclonic mid-level flow pattern is forecast from the upper
    Mississippi Valley into the Northeast on Tuesday and Wednesday. At
    the surface, a moist airmass is forecast to be in place over most of
    the eastern half of the nation with a quasi-stationary front located
    from the northern Plains east-southeastward into the southern Great
    Lakes. To the south of the front, surface dewpoints in the 70s F
    will likely result in the development of moderate to strong
    instability. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms appear likely to
    develop each afternoon in areas where low-level convergence becomes
    maximized. Outflow boundaries will be important in determining where
    the greatest convective coverage ends up being. In addition to the
    instability, moderate deep-layer shear is forecast over much of this
    moist airmass suggesting that an isolated wind-damage threat will be
    possible. However, the lack of any appreciable mid-level shortwave
    trough introduces considerable uncertainty.

    ...Thursday/Day 6 and Saturday/Day 8...
    From Thursday to Saturday, mid-level flow is forecast to become
    westerly over much of the northern U.S, with a front located from
    the central Plains eastward into the southern Great Lakes and Ohio
    Valley. Thunderstorm development will be possible each afternoon and
    evening near this front. Surface dewpoints in the 70s F to the south
    of the front, along with moderate to strong instability will make
    isolated severe thunderstorms possible each afternoon and evening.

    with increasing northwesterly flow aloft overspreading portions of

    boundary layer moisture will be in place ahead of a south/southeastward-developing surface front. There is some
    uncertainty regarding possible early-day convection of cloud debris
    across parts of the region. However, most guidance suggests a
    corridor of strong instability will develop by afternoon. Supercell
    wind profiles will support organized cells, possibly growing upscale
    with time along the surface front. Initially, a large hail risk
    could transition toward more of a damaging wind risk, particularly
    if upscale growth does occur as storms develop southeast through the
    evening.

    ...Days 5-8...

    Upper trough will deepen across the eastern U.S. and persist into
    the weekend. Meanwhile, an amplified upper ridge will remain in
    place across the western U.S. A surface front will sag south and
    east on Wednesday and Thursday as upper trough deepens and surface
    high pressure builds over the Great Lakes. Some isolated severe risk
    could emerge over the Mid-South/TN valley toward the Eastern
    Seaboard in response, but deep-layer flow will remain weak and

    Overall, the long range pattern will feature a ridge centered over
    the southern High Plains which may shift slightly west through the
    period. Some severe weather may occur within the northwesterly flow
    pattern from the northern Plains to the Ohio Valley Tuesday/D4 to
    Thursday/D6, but confidence is not high enough for probabilities at
    this time. There is an emerging signal for a seasonably strong high
    pressure to build into the eastern CONUS and shunt most of the
    richer low-level moisture to the Gulf Coast states. If this occurs,
    a relative lull in severe weather potential would exist from the

    Medium range guidance consensus depicts a persistent ridge fortified
    across the central CONUS through the Days 4-8 (Tuesday-Saturday)
    period. Multiple mid-level shortwave troughs and smaller scale
    impulses will pivot around the broader upper ridge and traverse the
    Pacific Northwest to northern Plains, Great Lakes, and Northeast
    through the week. The best chance for rounds of organized strong to
    severe thunderstorms will be with impulses overspreading a moist
    boundary layer from the Upper MS Valley to the southern New England/Mid-Atlantic regions. Details regarding the timing and
    placement of some of these impulses varies among medium-range
    guidance, rendering predictability too low for several potential
    severe scenarios.

    ...Days 4-7 (Tuesday-Friday) - Northeast/Mid-Atlantic...
    The Northeast to Mid-Atlantic will experience the east-northeast
    periphery of the aforementioned upper ridge, with multiple impulses
    expected to overspread the region through the middle of the week. At
    least isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms are expected each
    day Tuesday-Friday. At the moment, medium range guidance consensus
    shows the strongest signal in a mid-level impulse impinging on
    southern New England and the Mid-Atlantic on Day 5/Wednesday, where
    severe probabilities have been maintained.

    Guidance also depicts these same regions to have adequate vertical
    wind shear and instability Tuesday and Thursday, perhaps even
    extending into Day 7/Friday. Like Wednesday, several members of
    medium range ML/AI generated guidance also has severe probabilities
    over these regions Days 4-7. Unlike Wednesday though, deterministic
    medium range guidance varies in place and time of the more subtle
    impulses expected to support severe weather over the Northeast. It
    is acknowledged that severe probabilities will likely be needed in
    the future. However, probabilities have been withheld outside of
    Wednesday out of prudence given the degree of changes in forecast
    details expected in the coming days.
