    If you can get the drive out of the laptop, try taking it and smacking
    the side against your hand a couple of times. Some of the old drives
    from that era (especially Quantum drives) had lubricant that got sticky

    yeah i think the luburicant at the spindle motor is sticky
    i gotta replace this mobo of my main system i just been too busy

    Quantum Fireball drives in old Macs apparently used some earth-friendly
    lube that got sticky when it got hot - as a result, sometimes when the
    drive cooled down, it wouldn't respond to a power-up in time and refuse
    to boot. The palm slap took care of it, for a while. Thankfully Apple
    was good about replacing the drives.
