This line leads me to suspect that you have something in your retronet config wrong. Check to see what your routing is set to. It should be to your retronet hub. I suspect you've got the nixnet hub there.

Let me know what you find out. I'm glad to help. BTW, I've never been able
to get a mystic netmail to go direct. It always goes routed.

it's setup correctly. looking at the logs, i think it only routes via xxx, if i areafix from the Networking --> Echomail Nodes screen

it is set to YES for direct. but i looked at the logs and it seems to do it if i areafix within the Networking>>>Echomail Nodes screen. doing areafix from messages instead does route directly. must be a bug in the former.

Kinda makes me wonder if you have to actually setup a direct link in Echomail Nodes for the specific link you want to send direct, which would kind of defeat the whole purpose. Other than that, it would use the catch all link that you route everything wild carded through.

I also wonder, if you disabled that catch all wildcard link temporarily, and with those settings I mentioned, if it would do it then?

I've played with the settings til I got so frustrated that I gave up. I did send you a netmail with my hub setting to direct instead of crash. Let's see if you get it.

Is the netmail getting to it's intended destination? If so, then I fail to see a problem.

Yes, it's ultimately getting to it's intended recipient (via forwarding) and I have accepted that. Every once in a while, the issue creeps up

Forwarding is the way I've always been used to how netmail worked. I started off with WWIVnet, then Vnet and they both routed netmail just like echomail. I'm fairly new to the ftn type networks, so anything other than routing and forwarding is foreign to me.

I once had a fido hub that wouldn't forward any mail nor provide echomail feeds. He insisted I use "direct" mail. That led to me finding a new fidonet hub. Also, when originally trying to satisfy this requirement, I found out Mystic wouldn't/couldn't do direct netmail. With the help of a couple of sysops, I finally was convinced that I couldn't do it without jumping through a lot of hoops.

Yes, it's ultimately getting to it's intended recipient (via forwarding) and I have accepted that. Every once in a while, the issue creeps up and I will make an attempt to figure it out. At this point, it may be a losing battle.

I look at it like this: The routing part seems a carryover from the
dialup days when long distance calls cost money. With todays connection methods (other than dialup), why route anything. All that really does
is drastically increase the odds that something will break along the way
and the message won't get delivered. Why not just send it direct? I
can see no good reason to *EVER* route a netmail. Echomail is a
    completely different story, of course.

Sounds like someone thinking like they're still using old-school
dialup. And thinking it's 1991 when Fido was big enough to merit having
    a separate echomail feed.

With the internet, yes, you could crashmail *everything*, but part of
the fun of running this tech is making it all work, including message
    routing.

(I just had a flashback to an internet "consultant" back in 1994 that
was trying to convince us that SMTP mail was routed from mail server to
mail server, using a traceroute as evidence. Claiming that your mail
was sitting on a hard disk on every hop between you and the MX.
unfortunately, he was a friend of the CEO and we were stuck with him
until he got bored and moved on.)

I think of the days when my hub was a local toll call - I'd route
everything, so an email would go from me to my hub overnight. From
there, it'd go to the NEC on day 2, a star hub after that, then a local
NEC, local hub and to the destination. So, around 4-5 days. Echomail
    took about the same time.

A few years later, I had an ISDN line to my office and internet access.
Set up an FTP hub and was able to poll a couple of times a day. It was
a game changer, unfortunately by that time Fidonet was in decline.
