If it wasn't for the web browser in the external programs on the BBS, and it being set to CNN's lite-access/text-only page, I would never read (or watch) the news.
Not that I like CNN... there is nothing but propaganda in every article.. but at least the articles mention that certain events happened. Usually, if someone doesn't mention an event/happening on IRC, I don't know about it ;).
Maybe there are other "lite access"/text-only news sites? Anyone know of any?
As for regular ones and regular browsers... I kind of hate the web, and I hate news even more (because it's always just bad news).. so on a modern computer with a modern web browser I have absolutely zero incentive to visit a news site. On the BBSes, though, I'm on some old computer usually (right now a Commodore 64), so it's fun doing as many things as I can.. and I guess one of those things is using a text browser to catch up on global events.
When reading even the text news, though, sometimes I will get that sense of "it's all just bad news" or "it's all just propaganda" and have to stop... but it's a good reminder for myself, I suppose, and it comes in a more pleasant way (while using old computers) than if I were to do it from my modern desktop.
