Crescent Moon Meets Antares (evening)
As the sky begins to darken after sunset on Monday, October 7, Scorpius' brightest star Antares, the "rival of Mars", will twinkle a short distance to the northwest of the young crescent moon. In the Eastern Time zone, the
reddish star will be positioned about two finger widths from the moon. Skywatchers viewing the scene in more westerly zones will see the moon farther from the star. Hours earlier, residents of the Galapagos Islands and west across the South Atlantic Ocean to Easter Island are able to watch the moon occult Antares. For those living in the south half of South America, the occultation occurs in a bright sky.
